Super User geo g Posted April 22, 2023 Super User Posted April 22, 2023 Yesterday I was fishing one of community holes when I saw a little movement close to my feet. To my surprise I had a visitor watching me while I fished. This is not uncommon this close to the Everglades. 8 Quote

DaubsNU1 Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 Man, this brings back bad memories! In my high-school years, we spring turkey hunted in northern Nebraska...the day was warm as I was sitting next to a creek under shade trees. Decided to take a snooze. Drifted off...then something didn't feel right.... Woke up to see a big green snake traveling right across my chest!!! Bout pooped my pants! It was a non-venomous snake, but long...close to four feet. I've not been a fan of snakes since then. Two years back I was deer hunting in the Sandhills of Nebraska in November. Looked down and noticed this little friend just crawling along...NOPE. Quote
Functional Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 i hate threads like these....makes me want to move back north where all I had to worry about was the rare rattle snake, mountain lion, pack of coyotes and the crushing depression of 6 months of winter. . The more I read about FL the more I'm convinced its just a mini australia. Everything deadly and super sized. 1 Quote

We have coyotes galore, Florida Panthers, Florida Black Bears, and of course a healthy population of big pythons! Never leave home without defenses!!!!!!!! Quote

Captain Phil Posted May 24, 2023 Posted May 24, 2023 4 hours ago, Darth-Baiter said: for us West Coast guys..what is that snake. water moccasin? Most people currently living in Florida today believe every water snake they see is a moccasin. The majority of snakes you see while fishing are not venomous or aggressive. Water snakes grow large in Florida which can be scary. The best option is to treat each one with respect by giving them a wide berth. Never clean fish in the water as the smell attracts them and watch where you are walking or sitting. I have seen hundreds of snakes while fishing in Florida. The funniest time happened when I was loading my boat at Slim's Fish Camp in Okeechobee. My buddy was powering the boat on the trailer while I backed the truck in the water. When the boat came up, all I saw in my mirror was him running over the front of the trailer. When he hit the ground, he continued to run. I got out of the truck and asked him what was the matter? He said, "Look behind my seat in the boat!" Laying on the carpet coiled behind his seat was the biggest brown water snake I have ever seen!! We got him out of the boat with a fishing rod and went on our way home. It must has washed up into the boat with the motor's wake. Nasty... 2 Quote
Woody B Posted May 24, 2023 Posted May 24, 2023 I don't know where this originally came from, but I think about it every time I see a snake while I'm fishing. Quote I went fishing this morning but after a short time I ran out of worms. Then I saw a cottonmouth with a frog in his mouth. Frogs are very good bass bait. Knowing the snake couldn't bite me with the frog in his mouth I grabbed him right behind the head, took the frog, and put it in my bait bucket. Now the dilemma was how to release the snake without getting bit. So, I grabbed my bottle of Jack Daniels and poured a little whiskey in its mouth. His eyes rolled back, he went limp. I released him into the lake without incident and carried on fishing using the frog. A little while later, I felt a nudge on my foot. I looked down, there was that same snake with two frogs in his mouth. Life is good with Jack Daniels 4 Quote
