I have a JDM Tatula LT 2500 shallow spool for my drop shot rod.  I think in the US market they just offer the 3000 with a Shallow option.  I use straight Fluoro so with the shallow spool I can just use straight main line and not need a backing.  I plan to get some more Shallow spool options.  I've seen some JDM Shimano reels, and the new Tatula MQ might have some Shallow spool options.

I mono back every reel - 4# Zebco Cajun on the Spinning reels, 10# Big Game on the Casting reels.

Do you dislike electrical tape or just to save $?

Both. But I have used blue painters tape before and I've never had a problem with it.

I like the idea of electrical tape but in these hot summers I can see it becoming a gooey mess on the reel.  Is there any alternative?

For braid....On deep spools, mono backing to fill up the spool. On regular spools where I will need to change the line out at least once a year, mono backing. On shallow spools electrical tape over an arbor knot.

I use 3M super 33+ and it leaves no residue, even after many hot summers.

Mono mainly because I have so much of it that I need to burn through it somehow. Also, I don't like the electrical tape hack cause I can never get to lay it evenly around the spool. Always manages to crease or something somewhere. I only put 50-70 yards of braid on my spinning reels.

Give 1/2" wide Super 33+ tape a try. I only put on about 1.5" of tape over the knot and never had a problem with slipping, and no crease issues.

I need more line capacity than most every 'shallow' spool I've come across.

So it's At Least Regular spools for me.

However, prefer Deep spools if & when I can get them.

Bulk mono backing has been working well for a while now.

Your OP does not specify where.

My choices are for big water with plus sized fish.

Good Luck with the Scotch tape deal.

Wait don’t you throw down the tape then arbor on top of that?

Not me, I put the line around and tie the arbor, then put the tape on top of the knot, to smooth it out and I try to get at least half the spool taped over. The tape will hold the knot, keep it smooth, and the line will start to wrap over the tape as you spool it up give it grip.

That makes sense, just seems it would create a bump.

Shallow spools.

Even on surf reels with PE#1.5 X-braid

C0W1Kam.jpg

300 and 200 yds on these, 6500CT and 5500CT, 30-lb and 20-lb leader.

Also surf spinning with PE#1.5

4500CT for PE#1 - shore micro-jigging, 12-lb leader.

Inshore and bass, PE #1.2

Where I don't have a shallow spool option, I use 20-25-yds 20-25-lb mono backing and PE#2 working braid.

Backing for spinning, however, I'll use over-size braid for backing, and step down diameter to my working braid.

Here's the capacity calculator for stacking two lines.

@Ohioguy25  For seizing braid arbor knot to spool, I use PE/acrylic Mylar film tape.  This stuff is so tough (and so thin) I use it for seizing knots on kayak trolley line, where it lasts as long as the double braid sail cord (we work trolley lines hard in salt, drift fishing w/ sock, and run them up and down the hull 20 times/day).  When you want to peel it, the tape acrylic glue leaves Zero residue.

Why’s that?

When I am finesse fishing it means light baits, small hooks, no sinker, and light line no more than 10#.  Depending on where I am fishing I might need to retie a lot due to the line getting nicked up.  I also like to keep a little extra line on the spool just in case I run into a carp or large cat.

I prefer to not use a spinning setup. But spinning reels hold way more line than is necessary for bass fishing when I am using 10# braid. Considering spool weight doesn't mean anything for a spinning outfit, the weight and balance doesn't mean anything so just tape it to the spool. As long as braid lasts - just tie it to the spool and tape it. When the spool starts to get low, swap the line around and add a little mono filler to plump it up.

So you don’t believe it needs tape on the arbor to prevent the braid from shifting?

I said to put tape on the spool. Just a bit to keep it from spinning on the spool
