Normally I trust my gut and something was telling be don’t go down to the bridge today. I have been there before even at a lower river level than this. Something was just nagging me saying don’t do it but, my mind told my gut to shut it. Well, I picked the wrong rock Shute to go through. I knew the day would come this would happen for me. It’s the nature of running the river. As soon as I hit turned back around. Went up the correct Shute made it back to the ramp safely. I did not put a hole in the hull just dented it.

I know that feeling.

Glad you're OK.

Bummer your rig's a little dinged up.

The biggest thing I always worried is when this would happen would I be able to make it back to the ramp. Perfect storm with the way the wind was blowing up stream and the current river height.

You river guys are something else! I’d be a nervous wreck running skinny water with rocks all around.

Yes sir! Damage wise isn’t too bad. Replace that part and I’ll be good to go. I can even go to some of the electric only lakes nearby till it comes in.

It’s the stuff you don’t see that gets you generally. It’s really not that bad.  Just like today the river will bite you. doesn’t matter how long you’ve been fishing it. I actually thought at first I just bent the grates because I could still run up on plane. I just wanted to get back to the ramp ASAP incase I was taking on any water. Getting back to the ramp and trailered is the biggest concern.

IMO the boat is a tool to get me to the fishing spot.  If I hurt the tool it usually can be fixed.

To me a boat is more of an investment that I need to take care of the best I can. Accidents happen but, I don’t use my boat as a battering ram just to go catch some fish. I know some people do. Not to mention the fact that injury and death could occur. I don’t want to be welding or buy intakes every other month.

Craftsmen take care of their tools. It's still a tool

I’ll sacrifice a tool in a heartbeat  to get the job done. I won’t sacrifice my boat.

Glad you are alright and the boat should be an easy fix.  Maybe a plastic foot next time?

Thank you. Doesn’t get any easier than 6 nuts. I just need to hold out a 4-5 more months (hopefully) till I get my new boat. I am trying not to have to put more money into this one.

Boat is still a boat. I spent $42K on a 20ft aluminum boat back in 2013. I used it as a tool until I sold it. In 2021 for not much less than I paid for it. I was criticized for spending $42K on a 20ft aluminum boat back in 2013. What's that gonna cost you now? $60-$70K. I didn't lose much on the deal.

I am going to get a 18’ G3 tunnel CCJ. I like the ease of being able to swap things out on the fly with the outboards. All the new rockproof style inboard jets are awesome. Seeing more and more of them. They are built like tanks and probably weigh as much as one too.

Im just saying I will not spend 40k plus to beat a boat just to catch fish. Accidents happen. That’s part of running a boat shallow.  If I think I have a greater chance of putting a hole or breaking an intake just to get to a spot I will probably pass. If I do not think the risk is that high I will run it. If you spend 70K on a truck, I highly doubt you are going mudding and rock crawling with it.

I'm glad it wasn't worse.  I was talking to a guy a few weeks ago that has a river boat/fishes rivers a bunch.  He said he picks a landing  downstream from where he's going to fish,  the goes upsteam as far as he plans to go to start fishing.  That way if he has a problem he can drift back to the landing.  I don't know what the boat landing situation is where you fish, but I liked his plan.

I am looking at the hog island boatworks when I am ready to get a jet.  Basically a plastic boat that can take abuse on rivers well.

Inboard jet is the way to go for sure if you can swing the price.  I think an OB jet will be fine when I make that plunge into the jet boat world instead of my kayak.

Outboards are probably fine for 95% of what you will probably do. If you would get a tunnel with UHMW on the bottom it wouldn’t be much different then an inboard other then the steering and getting on plane as fast. I’ve run shallow and bumped bottom on plane. Just skate across it most times. This time I came through a turbulent water area and couldn’t tell where the rock was till it was to late.

I do like that idea. I actually do that most the time thinking about it. Generally up stream.  I tend to go furthest away first and work my way back to the ramp. Some ramps can be 6 plus miles apart. There is almost always someone out on the river here so more then likely I could get some help. I do think I will carry a spare boot on my next boat just incase.
