Not many details but, always sad to hear about. Especially on a stretch of river you fish. My hats off to the brave people who went into action immediately. Prayers to the family lost a loved one.

Wow, he is reported to have been wearing a life jacket but still drowned. Goes to show how powerful and dangerous water is.

Most of us tend to have the mindset of, "It couldn't or wouldn't be me." .... But it can be us. That's what the victims think too, and then it's them. Be careful out there folks.

Lord have mercy

It's not been good around here either.  A high school kid drowned a month or so ago in a 1500 acre lake in my county. (Moss Lake, Shelby NC) School was out that day.  Reports say around noon he jumped off a dock, then started to struggle before going under.   They found his body a couple hours later.

Then, at the end of last month a man drowned in Lake Wylie, the lake I fish all the time.  There was some kind of boating accident involving a "rowing style boat".  There's a yacht club near the place where it happened.  There's always row boats, both single and teams all around that area, as well as some sail boats.   They didn't find his body until the next day.

Be careful out there everyone.

I am not sure if you are familiar with this stretch. It’s incredibly deceiving how swift that water is there. Even no where near a high water event. Then having the boat ramp above the dam which I would say is not more then a 1/4 mile away. Things just happen so quick. My own personal rule is I will not fish at the bridges below city island.

Hate hearing about things like this, my condolences to the families.

The dam below City Island? Brian.

Sad to see.  Low head dams are one of the most dangerous things on any river as those currents are ridiculous.  I grew up with my dad telling me that life jackets are great but they don't replace common sense and respect for the river and certain places the just make it easier to recover the bodies.

Ya, that's a scary, unforgiving one. Brian.

Yeah no doubt. The crazy thing is how the water is calm as glass going up to it. You don’t see it till you’re into of it. The 83 bridge is what I use for reference. I just tend not to go below any of the bridges down stream of city island.

Update: they operators were trying to restart their motor and could not get it to refire. The boat did not have a trolling motor and no anchor line was deployed. They went broad side over the dam.

Sorry to hear about this incident. I'm a volunterer firefighter in PA and hold certification in water rescue, my fire company is a 3A Swiftwater Rescue capable. When we take training classes a lot of time is spent on the dangers of low head dams. They are unforgiving.

Thank you for doing what you do!

Man I fished there many times last year. From ashore of course. I would never go near there on boats. Prayer for the unfortune family.

For someone stuck in a hydraulic as retentive as one a low head dam can produce, unless you had someone ready on live bait (tethered swimmer), it's hard to expect a positive outcome.  Even then, rescue might be impossible.  Highly encourage the PFD wearing, but if you're in swiftwater, there are a lot of river features that can easily drown you with one on.

I live in Beautiful Franklin Twp about 1/4 from the Pine Run boat ramp. Good to meet someone from the area!

Hopefully going to put the SS Minnow in the pond tomorrow.
