Super User slonezp Posted April 10, 2023 Super User Posted April 10, 2023 I've been peppered from duck hunters...Much of this is about respect. I was fishing docks with my dad. Had a gentleman ***** and ***** and ***** that we were fishing his dock. His grandkids swim there...On the way back into the ramp, dad ticked in his coffee cup and told me to slow down as we passed his dock. Poured the tick in the lake. Said the guys grandkids could swim in his tick. With all due respect Glenn, your editor sucks.] Quote

thediscochef Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 I've been lucky enough to have minimal confrontations, the thing about being primarily shorebound is that I can avoid most private property disputes by not trespassing. I also like to avoid surprise gunfire. I only really have conflict with boaters at one spot and it's next to a boat ramp, so I should expect some crossover. Funny enough the only real confrontation I've had was one run-in with a park volunteer who told me I couldn't fish off the boat docks at Isle du Bois state park, and threatened to have the state parks police come over and yada yada. If there had been any actual boat trailers of any kind present in the park I might be able to understand why. The actual rule at most texas state parks is: without "no fishing" signage displayed, it's OK to fish wherever you are as long as you are not impeding vehicular, equestrian, or pedestrian traffic. The ramp at Isle is the only one of the seven TPWD-managed ramps that does not have the "no fishing from pier" signage, so therefore only the traffic rules apply at these specific docks - I've cleared this with multiple state parks police officers and park rangers while they were standing on the dock with me and my gear. Some people are just intent on exerting some sort of control or power in every circumstance they encounter ?♂️ Quote

Susky River Rat Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 I am thankful I do not have to deal with the dock issues like that. I do however run into a lot of kayakers who think I need to get out of their way while I’m fishing. 1 Quote

Texas Flood Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 I see dock owners as no different than someone who lives on a golf course. Most have no issue at all but there are a few that get upset for no reason other than to be upset. Quote

On one hand, it's hard to blame him because we have all of these different rules for different lakes in the city, and they're not well posted so you kind of have to do your own research. On the other hand, this guy is a power-tripping, extremely aggressive jerk and really loves to try to escalate things and intimidate people. The last time we talked, he tried to convince me that electric motors aren't allowed on kayaks shorter than 12' (mine's 11' 9"). But that only applies to one lake in the city, and not the one we're on. So he's screaming, chewing me out, stepping into my face and I'm calmly trying to explain to him how he might be mistaken, because I have the city ordinances memorized by number, and it just made him furious to have anyone question his authority. So I finally just told him I was a lawyer (a lie, but a legal one), and if he thought I was wrong then he should just write me a ticket and we'll continue this conversation in front of a judge. He let me go "this one time" but told me never to do it again. I've seen him several times since at that lake, and now he avoids me. He must have done his research after we talked. 5 Quote
Super User Swamp Girl Posted April 10, 2023 Super User Posted April 10, 2023 @Bankc, I figure this cop is going to have a cardiologist one day...if he survives. Here are some things that anger does to a body: The long-term physical effects of uncontrolled anger include increased anxiety, high blood pressure and headache. In the two hours after an angry outburst, the chance of having a heart attack doubles. One study found there was a three times higher risk of having a stroke from a blood clot to the brain or bleeding within the brain during the two hours after an angry outburst. Harvard University scientists found that in healthy people, simply recalling an angry experience from their past caused a six-hour dip in levels of the antibody immunoglobulin A, the cells’ first line of defense against infection. A group of Harvard University scientists studied 670 men over eight years using a hostility scale scoring method to measure anger levels and assessed any changes in the men's lung function. The men with the highest hostility ratings had significantly worse lung capacity, which increased their risk of respiratory problems. If you're stressed and angry, you'll shorten your lifespan. And there's a lot more. Anger is acid to our cells. I hope some Kens or Karens read ^this^. 3 1 Quote

The funniest thing that ever happen to me in this regard was when my buddy and I were fishing a tournament. We were fishing a boat dock when an older lady came out of her house and started hollering at us for catching her "pet" bass. When we ignored her, she turned on her garden hose and proceeded to wet us both down. We left the dock laughing so hard we could hardly fish. ? 5 Quote

I fish a couple of those too. I have 2 friends with ponds. I have access to one of the two the local city water reservoirs that is owned by the people surrounding it. We have a couple of electric only DNR lakes close by. There's a nature preserve and a couple of state parks within a decent drive. None of these would have boats running gas motors. 2 minutes ago, Captain Phil said: The funniest thing that ever happen to me in this regard was when my buddy and I were fishing a tournament. Cbump Posted April 10, 2023 Posted April 10, 2023 I had an old lady come out and cheer for me when my daughter and I caught a good one near her dock. Other than hellos, that’s the only interaction I’ve had with any dock owners. 2 Quote

They have time trails every Wednesday in downtown Knoxville. They were warming up and I was riding in my buddies bass boat, heading down river bout 40 mph. A kayaker was DETERMINED to cross the river perpendicular right in front of us . No clue why, guess he had a death wish or was fluffing himself up like a gobbler strutting in spring. here comes a bass boat, let me intentionally paddle as hard as I can right into their path. It reminded me of those people you see walk behind a box truck that’s backing up with a loud beeping sound and reverse lights 3 Quote

I cannot come off plane in 3-6” of water. I really feel like it should be mandatory for kayakers to take a safety course. 1 Quote

Super User Alpster Posted April 10, 2023 Super User Posted April 10, 2023 1982 in Amite Louisiana I was working on 500KV power transmission line across the state. It was the biggest in the US at the time. We passed this guys property every day. He had a beautiful small lake. I stopped and asked to fish it sometime. He exploded and threatened to shoot, call police, etc. if we were caught there. He also noticed my company's survey truck I was driving and was very curious about what was happening with the power line. Long story short, we stopped by about once a week to update him on the power line & chew the fat and I learned in passing that he was fond of cheese crackers and Mountain Dew. We continued to stop by about once a week and would happen to have a cold Mountain Dew and some cheese crackers. It took almost a year to convince the old man to let us fish his pond. I caught my PB in that little lake and I still haven't beat it 40 years later. Better to call a truce than win the war sometimes. 11 Quote
