MediumMouthBass Posted April 5, 2023 Posted April 5, 2023 Hello, theres alot of the newer Revo Gen 5 baitcasting reels on most fishing tackle websites, but not many reviews. And theres not much info on them from people who have them. Most newer Abu reels arent as popular as the Daiwa, Shimano, and Lews comparable reels. And the gen 4's were talked about by many as being bad if not terrible reels, people constantly talking about the side plate falling off etc.... Even though theres better reels for the money like the Tatula or even the cheaper LFS or SLX models of baitcasters but the Abu Garcia Black Max from Walmart is what got me started in baitcasters and id like to try some of Abu's better/more expensive reels. So for anyone that has one of the newer Revos or just has some thoughts or opinions on them please comment so myself aswell as anyone that may be interested in getting one of them might be able to choose to buy one or not. Super User casts_by_fly Posted April 6, 2023 Super User Posted April 6, 2023 Not sure which level of model you’re talking about. I have a couple Stx in gen 3 and 4, sx gen 4, and an mgx in whatever generation they were last. I like the gen 4 reels a lot. But not at MSRP. I don’t have the gen 5 stx but they aren’t discounted so at $225 there are a lot better reels out there and especially if you buy Jdm. That will be why you haven’t seen many real world reviews. Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 If you’ve had revos before and liked them you’ll probably like the gen 5. If had them and didn’t like them, you probably won’t now. They’re not night and day different. 2 Quote
Mojo Bass Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 I never understood the people who complained about the gen4 side plates falling off….. I have 6 gen4 revo’s 4revo X’s and 2 revo SX’s and I’ve fished them for a couple years they are my daily drivers and I’ve never had the side plate come off or accidentally pressed the button it’s a seriously firm button/switch……. So I’ve never understood that notion….. worth noting I fish the SX’s every outting and only use the X’s sometimes because of what rods I have them attached too but still they get regular use In my humble opinion I believe the SX’s are very good reels I would recommend them to anyone and I’m sure the gen5 SX’s will be very good too….. I’d like to buy one but I probably won’t because I don’t need anymore rods or reels at the moment……… Also I bought my two SX’s for 140$ Canadian each so that also factors into why I feel good about them because I didn’t pay a big price for them and they have that “solid” feel…. not the lightest reel by any means but smooth and sturdy feeling and have yet to let me down just my opinion that they’re a good option if you wanna try a different reel, but I do know shimanos and diawas are more refined/better reels Quote
msgf91 Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 I want to get a gen 5 or a zenon, or even one of the new spinning reels but with the JDM thing going on I've been getting JDM reels. I wouldn't mind trying to get the BFS Zenon since its at JDM prices, but I'll probably get the new SS Air first. Or I'll wait till I can get a decent deal on my local forum, last year I picked up some MGX's for 100 each. Quote
ghost Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 All I can say about Revo Gen 5 baitcast reels is... they are heavy. Than other brand reels. Quote
SproDD79 Posted April 6, 2023 Posted April 6, 2023 I picked up the gen 5 revo winch 25% off, I wouldn't pay full price for it. Used it a few times, so far it's a good cranking reel, I think the biggest difference from gen 4 is the ergonomics, it's definitely more comfortable to palm for all day cranking. I have a few other cranking reels such as the Bantam PG and the Steez A crazy cranker, both are significantly better reels imo, but at a 25% discount the gen 5 winch is worth considering. If no discount is available, I would look to Shimano or Daiwa. Quote
Kendall Lunsford Posted October 4, 2023 Posted October 4, 2023 I have been an ABU fan since the inception of Revo......I purchased 2 Gen 5 STX's to test.... Both placed on chatterbait rods to put through the paces. There are vast improvements to the STX line over all previous generations..... Easier palmablity, yet still with a wide / deep spool, and ultra smooth operation. New 90mm handle and redisigned paddles add comfort, control and power to the reel. IVCL-6L improves castability and distance..... This is not a light reel... but balances well with my Dobyns rods....Durability and functionality is the key for me and feel that it is deal at this price point.... Due to the positive results, I have just ordered two new Gen 5 SX's...... Im sure I will equally impressed... Quote
