Super User flyfisher Posted April 4, 2023 Super User Posted April 4, 2023 Got my raised beds ready to plant and mapped it all out. I follow square foot gardening principles which allows for maximum yield in a smaller footprint. Pretty simple but you basically look at plant spacing and not row spacing. This will be the first year I have done the whole trellis deal so we will see how it goes. 11 Quote
Super User gim Posted April 4, 2023 Super User Posted April 4, 2023 Hey @flyfisher I am attempting a raised garden bed at the house I moved into last May this spring. Its on the south side of my house and has 4 foot high fencing to keep critters out. Its 6 feet wide by 12 feet long in size. Last spring/summer, I pulled all the weeds and sprayed it. In the fall, I graded and leveled it, then dumped a bunch of leaves on it for compost before the snow came. This is the first time I've ever had a garden, so my wife and I would like to try something relatively easy. My wife thinks tomatoes, cucumber, and green beans. What do you think? I'm probably still about a month away from being able to plant anything. Quote
Super User flyfisher Posted April 4, 2023 Author Super User Posted April 4, 2023 Those are pretty easy to grow and given your short growing season you might want to get seedlings as they will shorten the time to yield. Zucchini, yellow squash, potatoes, beets, greens, bell peppers and hot peppers are also pretty easy to grow. For tomatoes if you get seedlings you will want to plant them all the way up to the first set of leaves as all that stem will turn into roots and also prune them by pinching off the suckers aka the little growths that like to grow in the bends as it just robs nutrients from the plant. Check out burpee and they have a grow map basied on region as well that will help. Your garden is about double the size of my long bed in the pics so you have polenty of room depending on you have it set up. I am able to reach all the garden without going inside and you can too given the size. 1 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted April 5, 2023 Global Moderator Posted April 5, 2023 Trellis in raised beds worked really well for us a couple years ago, my wife planted some kind of peas and Japanese green beans that swallowed the trellis pretty rapidly. the square foot idea seems like it would work well, I’ve had many buddies that planted everything all on top of each other when lacking space, beans grew up the zucchini stalks, etc. This leaves almost no room for weeds to grow, they claim it’s a Native American strategy Quote

I spread my green bean stalks too far apart last year, got like 7 beans a day, me and tiny Tim had to split them for supper hahah Quote
Super User Choporoz Posted June 7, 2024 Super User Posted June 7, 2024 Got a couple pickup beds full of composted manure this spring. Our raised beds have never taken off like this. We're going to have more than 7 beans, I think 4 Quote
Super User gim Posted June 29, 2024 Super User Posted June 29, 2024 Weeded the garden today. Plants look pretty good. Cucumbers, carrots, pumpkin, and tomato. 1 Quote
