Here are my setups. My favorite rod is the Cherrywood, then the Ugly stick Carbon. The cherrywood i started using last year as i bought it on sale for $12.00, its great for everything i catch in the rivers.

Smallies, Lm, walleye, even 40 inch muskies i have caught with the cherrywood. You Just need to know how to fight a fish in current and use the drag properly.

I enjoy wearing the fish out with a good fight using Pfleuger reels, 832 braid 30# with Abraisix 20# snelled leaders to the jig. Cherrywood allows me to bomb cast 1/8 oz ballhead jigs and feel the jig bouncing off the rocks in the moving current.

True that, what I have seen is how few know how to keep a thumb on the spool.   All they know is tighten the drag in anxiety equals broken reels and rods.   I'm on the cheap side with Fish-drops and KastKing.   What most don't know is the boys that create the KK reel use Shimano, Diawa and Penn components.   LOL   Red and weep.   BFS, enjoy the fight in economy.

Using expensive things feels good, but so does getting something done at a bargain price.

I'm getting a tattoo of that quote.

I've been out fished in my boat by a guy using a $40 combo. I'll never talk bad about anyone's gear. You're catching fish and having fun, that's all that matters.

I still love my Black Max reels. Great bargain reels!

I’ve got 3 spinning combos that are worth about $25 each but they are almost solely used for bobber fishing. Toss it out, stick it in the rod holder, kick the feet up, grab a beer, and wait. Then wait some more. And drink more beer.

I guess I'm a little bit of a 'spend-thrift' then.

Cheapest spinning rigs I got are

1: Mitchell Avocet RZT-1000 on an 7'6" Okuma Celilo UL/F

2: Mitchell Avocet RZT-2000 on an 7'0" Okuma Celilo L/MF

 - two of my crappie rigs - about $90 retail each

Other end of the spectrum are

1: Shimano Miravel 2500 on a 7'1" Mojo Bass M/F - that's my shaky/neko/wacky rig - about $280 retail

2: Shimano Ultegra 1000 on a 7'0" Procyon L/F - my ned/hair jig rig - about $230 retail.

Caught my biggest fish all year on a humble Abu Veritas PLX 7'6 medium heavy moderate fast with a Daiwa Fuego 8 speed.  The rod was 112$ and the reel was 80$.

Caught two over 8 lbs and bank flipped one and it's still catching fish.

I also do a lot of bank fishing and can't justify using something that deserves a rod locker inside of a nice boat storage compartment.

One of my favorite combos was/is a 7’ Wright & McGill rod $50.00 paired to a SLX to be replaced with a Favorite Soleus I bought during the 2021 Black Friday sale for $50.00.

Same for me lol I fish some shady places so I bring my ugly stiks and lightning rod shock more often than my nicer rods. But this year I've been trying to use my nicer rods more often. But the shady places have the best fishing usually?

I usually fish with St Croix Legend Elites,LTBs and Victory rods paired up with Stradics and Vanfords.

That being said my favorite setup right now is an older 6'6" HMG with the new Plueger Supreme.

I'm using it for jerkbaits.

@throttleplate I just finished putting together a combination I tried a little bit at the end of last season in the hopes of taking advantage of a 2 day warming trend tomorrow after work. The rod is good lord I have no idea how old and I know I paid too much for it at K-Mart when I did buy it but Roland Martin endorsed it which made it worth it ?. The reel is a $40.00 Kast King that I really like, the line is Trilene Big Game and the spinnerbait I will be throwing is a Wal Mart $1.00 special. I do not have Muskie in the pond I’ll be hitting after work but I’m hoping I can borrow some of your mojo for the bass and crappie that reside in this particular pond?

As per my prior post I got out yesterday for around a 1/2 hour, posted the fish pic in the appropriate post. I’m not going to try sell anyone on the Kastking reel but I will say for what I’m using it for it sure does a nice job. I traded in a Piscifun Spark reel at the BPS spring sale due to the fact I couldn’t keep the tension set to save my life and wound up backlashing that reel every couple dozen casts but my Kastking Royal Legend 2 has found it’s purpose in my collection of combos.
