Super User geo g Posted April 2, 2023 Super User Posted April 2, 2023 Good job keep experimenting. But after 50 years of bass fishing, as soon as you think you figured it out, they make you look silly! Just keep learning, it never stops, and no two days are ever exactly the same. It keeps it interesting! 5 Quote
papajoe222 Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 “Learn different styles and apply the one that’s best for where you are.” That applies to bank fishermen as well as boaters. Another way to put it is to fish your strong suit until it doesn’t work then try something else. it’s much easier to adapt to conditions than trying to change them. 5 Quote
Pat Brown Posted April 2, 2023 Posted April 2, 2023 Yeah I think that the moving target aspect is part of what makes it challenging/interesting. Just when you figure them out, they change. From time to time I do get dialed in on a pattern and while they hold out...game on. Congratulations. Quote

I’ve always loved power fishing, big, faster moving baits on casting gear, and only occasionally used lighter line presentations. I finally started to make myself go offshore more often and use more finesse type stuff, and there are many times where that’s been the best way to get numbers of big fish. Had I stuck to my shallower, larger baits many days, I’d be coming home with a big ole skunk instead of a boatload of nice offshore bass. 1 Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted April 2, 2023 Super User Posted April 2, 2023 You gotta fish where the fish are. Gary Klein once told me no matter where he fishes if he can locate the fish there are no less than 5 lures he can catch them on.? 6 Quote

My offshore structure fishing consists of Texas Rigs 1/4-1/2 oz, Jig-n-Craws 3/8-3/4 oz, deep diving crankbaits, & big spoons. 1 hour ago, TOXIC said: no less than 5 lures he can catch them on. Bet you it's 5 lures he has confidence in. Worst thing you can do is try learning a new technique when they ain't biting. 6 1 Quote

That’s definitely true in a lot of cases, especially down where your fishing. Try that up here offshore for Georgian Bay smallmouth though and you’ll get a good sun tan and that’s about it ?. 3 Quote

Super User Mobasser Posted April 2, 2023 Super User Posted April 2, 2023 It's better to learn a few baits very well, than have a huge box of baits you don't really understand. Plus, most bass lures are versatile, and can be fished in different ways. 3 Quote
Super User Bird Posted April 2, 2023 Super User Posted April 2, 2023 Oh and always stay humble. 2 weeks ago I fished a deep clear lake with a 1 fish reputation. I caught 8 so went back with a buddy expecting to put on a clinic......1 desperate fish. The fish are more in control than we are. 2 Quote

PaulVE64 Posted April 4, 2023 Posted April 4, 2023 Honestly, I normally bring 5 presentations. A few in a 2nd colour. Its versatile and "finessey" Quote

The guys that win the most tournaments around here pitch soft plastics. 100% of the time, year round. They’ve gotten really really good at It and that’s what they do. While the rest of the field is running around thinking the bass “should be hitting chatterbaits and squarebills. Well that’s not working so let’s try a spinnerbait. Dang not today. Let’s run across the lake. I swear It's pre-spawn and Shad spawn. This should be working!!! Let’s run across the lake again.” Meanwhile the winner is slowly working an area all day getting big bites pitching a creature. 2 Quote
