Cbump Posted March 30, 2023 Posted March 30, 2023 I want a short rod for light pitching and accurate spinnerbait casting. Here’s the choices: Falcon Expert Head Turner 6’10” H $195 Dobyns Champ XP 684c 6’8” H $180 Or any others I should look at? Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted March 30, 2023 Super User Posted March 30, 2023 I have the expert HT and use it for those things every trip so I think you know my answer. I don’t know dobyns. I’ve also never been tempted to try one so there’s that. 1 Quote

They just seem so hard to find right now! if I got the head Turner, what do you think about pairing It with a Tatula 70sv for those techniques? Quote

Falcons website has them available. Free shipping. I don’t have a tatula but I fished my zillion on it. It has the metanium right now. It’s also has had an stx and maybe the chronarch. All are just fine so pick your preference. It’s not a long or heavy rod. It’s not an ultralight rod. So middle of the road weight reels and pick the profile of your choice. Quote
Super User ATA Posted March 30, 2023 Super User Posted March 30, 2023 Dobyns Champ XP 684c 6’8” H $180 That was obvious. And it is my all around rod when I only carry one combo. 1 Quote
rangerjockey Posted March 30, 2023 Posted March 30, 2023 Of those 2 I'd go with the Falcon. Although I'm not the biggest fan of the Expert. 1 Quote
The Bassman Posted March 30, 2023 Posted March 30, 2023 Not as well known are FX Custom rods. I have two, one being a 6'8" MH Extreme Angler. I spin fish mostly but these rods are incredibly light and crisp. Made in USA, too. 1 Quote

rangerjockey Posted March 30, 2023 Posted March 30, 2023 The Expert always felt a bit too quick to me for a Falcon action. And the Fazalites on a $200 rod is no bargain. Heck, It's a spinnerbait rod, the Lowrider or Bucoo version would be fine. Quote

I have no problems with fazlite rings. they are more than durable enough for all line types, they are durable enough to hold up against physical impacts, and they are light enough to not interfere with the rod. You'd not notice a difference fishing the same rod with alconites. the only gripe then is that they are 'too cheap' of a guide to put on a $200 rod but at the end of the day you're buying the full package and to me that means the blank first and foremost, then the grip needs to be comfortable. the rest of the rod just needs to get out of the way and let me fish. Action wise I hear you. The experts do feel a little stiffer than the caras I have, but I don't have the same blank in both to compare directly. the cara tips (top 6-8") seem just a touch softer but its close. Quote
Cbump Posted March 30, 2023 Author Posted March 30, 2023 I like a stiffer action anyway. Almost said stiffer Rod ? 3 Quote

Derek1 Posted March 30, 2023 Posted March 30, 2023 I do t have the Dobyns so can’t comment on that. I have the expert head turner, and it’s great at all that stuff and more. 1 Quote
Super User new2BC4bass Posted March 30, 2023 Super User Posted March 30, 2023 I only have one Dobyns. Not the one listed. I like it. Not always the lightest, but most models are well balanced from what I read. I have several Falcons, but not the Head Turner. All but one are older models. I absolutely don't need any more rods, but the Head Turner is one I want anyway. Best of luck with your decision. Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted March 30, 2023 Super User Posted March 30, 2023 Dobyns all the way. Lifetime warranty. Great rods. 1 Quote

LEGIT DESIGN STAND OUT Casting Rod 6'10" Med Hvy A rod that supports a wide range of fishing methods that play a central role in power fishing including cover fishing with jigs and worms, as well as single hook hard baits like spinnerbaits and bladed jigs. To be fair, I haven't used it a ton yet. They're a JDM company that I didn't know anything about before doing a little research. When I first took it out of the tube, it felt great in hand and balanced really well. It only weighs 3.81 oz, which is about the same as my 6'11 medium+ Poison Adrena. Fit and finish is really nice. The handle is removable, but I doubt I'll ever take it back off. Once you put it on tight, it's in there. It takes some cranking to get it off (at least mine does). But that's fine, I didn't buy it for that reason. As far as usage, I've only used it during one outing this year. I didn't catch anything on it. I was mostly just getting a feel for it and what it can do. It's rated a mod-fast, but I'd say it's a little closer to fast. I think it's gonna do great at a lot of things. Close quarter/pin point spinnerbait fishing for sure. As well as jigs/Texas rigs. Swim Jigs, Chatterbaits, Keitech's. 2 Quote
Blaine Donders Posted April 1, 2023 Posted April 1, 2023 I’ve had that Dobyn’s, and have that Falcon in the Cara. I have used an Expert as well (used a friends). In my hands, there is no comparison with the blank sensitivity between these two, favoring the Falcon. In fact, a lot of people I know favor the Expert over the Cara, because the blank feels nearly as nice and it’s $50 cheaper. 2 Quote
