I am a Shimano man, but I’m considering trying one of these. My main question is will the T-Wing system pass a leader knot (FG)? It would replace a Bantam MGL on a Destroyer BMG. I have Metaniums, Bantams, and an Antares and have never owned a Diawa reel. I’m hoping someone who has experience with Shimano and Diawa can weigh in with how a Steez compares to those reels.

T wings pass leader knots bigger than an FG.  Everything Daiwa makes in reels is top quality for its price.

I recently branched out to more Diawas from shimano,  zillion and alphas. 30lb braid to 16lb fc 100 with a fg knot passes through fine. I’m very happy with both diawa and shimano.

Yep, the T-wing has a larger opening than than the Shimano reels.  So, any knot that works with Shimano will work fine with T-wing.

Crazy how there are so many differences of opinion on this. Some say only certain small (FG etc) knots will pass through, others say any knot will pass through, others say most if not all braid to leader knots will occasionally catch on T wing. I have a new Zillion I haven’t yet spooled up so I guess I’ll find out soon enough. But because of posts saying knots will be an issue, I’ve been considering just going with straight fluorocarbon.

No problem casting the question is retrieving a braid to leader knot through the narrow T-wing slot!

Use a 7’ leader and the knot isn’t an issue.

100% my experience. I found out with a leader that is long enough to get on the spool the knot occasionally would hang up while fighting a fish so now I tie them to go just up to the reel basically. This is an fg knot by the way.

pass thru the T-Wing in which direction?

reeling in, I can feel it hang up for sure.  I do have mine spooled with heavy braid, so my FG is really a FFGG knot.  fat.  fatish.

I'm going to use a very short leader just to add that little bit on the end to hopefully not hang up on my trebles as it is flying thru the air.  all theory at this point.

I originally posed the question because I had read somewhere that the t wing system can have issues with leaders. The more I thought about it, I hardly ever bring a leader onto the reel. After the responses, I went ahead and ordered a JDM version of this reel.

I guess reeling in, I always have had a tick with any  baitcaster with a fluoro leader, so I was only thinking of if it was more of an issue on the casting side.  I have migrated to straight fluoro with baitcasters, but that started with Curados, Daiwa is a more recent addition to my collection.
