2tall79 Posted March 26, 2023 Posted March 26, 2023 I know how effective a Red Red Eye Shad can be for smallmouth in the pre-spawn/spawn period. But what about largemouth? Are they equally as effective for them? I've been fishing for a good number of years but only recently have started throwing lipless. Thanks 1 Quote
Super User Scott F Posted March 26, 2023 Super User Posted March 26, 2023 It’s gotten so that the orange craw color, Red Eye Shad is the only lipless bait I throw anymore 2 Quote
2tall79 Posted March 26, 2023 Author Posted March 26, 2023 Sorry mods, should have listed in "Fishing Tackle" section. Quote
stratos4me Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 Yes. I like red and loud when the water gets dirty from spring run off. It works on lakes without crawdads too! 4 Quote
GonzoFishing Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 Red/Orange lipless are killer lures here in So. Florida! It's caught me multiple different species one cast after another including a nice 7.4lb largemouth. Peacock bass and all the other invasive/introduced species hit that thing with a vengeance too. 1 Quote
KP Duty Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 Yes. I have a pic on my old photobucket account of a crawfish tail that a bass threw up on the boat deck. It was bright red with brown patches. This tournament was on a lake by the Texas border where there is a lot of 'red dirt'. Don't know if he was red all the time, or just in early spring. 3 Quote
Pat Brown Posted March 28, 2023 Posted March 28, 2023 Seems like I try and try and then I tie on a shad pattern and catch a fish. It's gotta be a confidence thing because I KNOW they catch fish. I'll keep trying! 4 Quote
Dan N Posted March 29, 2023 Posted March 29, 2023 First bass last spring in Wisconsin, still ice in that spot this year. Caught several that day on same bait. 2 Quote
thunderblack Posted March 29, 2023 Posted March 29, 2023 Great option for walleye and largemouth in cold weather here. I had one spring where I caught everything with a red redeye shad and a great fall with a Rapala Clackin rap. 1 Quote
LonnieP Posted March 30, 2023 Posted March 30, 2023 I caught this bass years ago with a red Bill Lewis Rattle Trap 2 1 Quote
BigAngus752 Posted March 30, 2023 Posted March 30, 2023 I feel that, regardless of the time of year, if you are fishing certain conditions (sunny day, clear-ish water, lake with gizzard shad as primary prey) you won't enjoy the same success with red as you would with chrome or shad pattern. Likewise, a lake with "dirty" water and/or cloudy weather you might find more success. I just can't get into the "this thing in this color during this month" thing. There are too many other variables. Throw your red lipless 50 casts in a spot you have confidence there are fish. There's your answer for that particular day and time. Try it on a different day under different circumstances, you may get a different answer. Make a mental note (or an actual note if you keep a log) of the specific circumstances and the success rate and you may not have to ask the question ever again. 53 minutes ago, LonnieP said: I caught this bass years ago with a red Bill Lewis Rattle Trap That piggy needs to switch to light beer! 2 Quote
