Had it out once when I first got it a few years ago.  When I test new gear, I almost always have a spinnerbait tied on because I hate losing lures when I know there is almost zero chance of catching any fish.  I had it out 3 days ago with a lightly weighted worm hook and a ribbontail.  I kept looking down to make sure line was being retrieved as it felt like I was cranking with an empty spool.

I'm thinking I might have to limit the reel to lures with a bit more feedback.  How are you using your SV103?

BTW, the rod I was using is one of my favorites (RX7 Rainshadow 7' MHF) and is reasonably sensitive.  It gives me more feedback with a spinnerbait than other rods of mine that people on here say have good sensitivity.

I was surprised at how well the reel performed as it was windy and it's been months since I've been out.  Never backlashed or overran once.  Even hit tree branches behind me a couple times, but managed to avoid any surprises.  ?

I know exactly what you mean and I don’t like that feeling either. Almost like it’s so smooth I can’t tell I’m actually cranking anything in.

I have three, one 7 speed I use for soft plastics and finesse jigs mostly, a 6 speed  for spinnerbaits and chatterbaits and the other 6 speed is going to replace my Tatula 150 that broke and get 50-65# braid and see use flipping, pitching and frogging.

I love the two SVs I have, one older one new, so smooth!

What happened to your 150? I bought one last year for frogging and it’s been a beast, hope it stays that way.

This is the reel in question if anyone is wondering.  This is what we refer to as the "SV 103" because that's the name daiwa gave to their 34 mil spool old zillion as a last hurrah of the platform. It wasn't called a zillion because they already had tatula based zillion out at the time.  They also sold us the alphas sv at the same time but called it an "SV 105" since Americans can't handle the reel being called "alphas".  The 1st time it came around it was called "sol" for the same reason.

The side plate will not stay screwed in and just falls off as a result. I haven't looked at how that works or tried to fix it, it might be a nut back there I can replace but as I ordered a Tatula Elite for crankbaits  and jerkbaits for this season which gives me an extra reel. Sometime when I have time, I'll look at fixing it, but with my total 7 baitcasters I usually have reels with the line I need available so no rush you know.

I don't think this is a common problem though.

Glad to see some posts regarding my favorite reel. TD-Z platform is built to last, regardless its heavy weight. Back then, they hadn't had Steez yet, so TD-Z  was supposed to be Daiwa's best offering on low profile baitcasters, with some crazy smooth cranking.

I have a lefty version of that old SV103 and love it. I always keep my eyes out for them in case I see one pop up.

I don't really understand the "Too Smooth" complaint because all I feel with mine is the wobble of the crankbait or spinnerbait blade and I love that!

If you happen to decide you don't like it,... Fear not! I'm sure there are others that would be glad to take it off your hands. Including me!,... Even if it is a righty!! ?
