Joined this forum recently and have made some posts and have gotten alot of help, so to those of you who have offered advice thank you.

Just opened up my new Lews reels tonight (BB1 Pro, Super Duty LFS, and the regular LFS). The LFS and Super Duty LFS seem really nice but the BB1 Pro however seems off, when i reel in slowly or shake the reel it makes a sound that none of any of my baitcasting reels make and the other 2 lews reels dont have it either only the BB1 Pro, its hard to describe it but its kind of like a metal clicking/springy type of sound. It makes the sound only when reeled in slowly, or shaken. This is one of my first over $200 reels and i only have experience with the budget version of lews reels before this purchase. So maybe this is normal for lews reels or maybe its a problem. This may sound stupid to some people, but a strange noise coming from a $200+ reel is making me concerned, so would really like to know if this is something, or nothing.

Also dont know if this matters but, the handle on the BB1 Pro is much looser than the LFS/Super Duty LFS.

Any help on this would be great and appreciated.

Thanks.

The LFS and Super Duty both have magnetic brakes which are fixed with no moving parts, but the BB1 has free-flying brake blocks. If you shake the reel, you will hear the brake blocks pinging the metal friction surface they use to create friction. There's nothing wrong with it. It's not a defect.

The handle is held on by a single nut. The nut is kept from rotating by a retainer plate. If the handle is a bit loose on the crankshaft, you can tighten it easily by removing the retainer, then LIGHTLY tightening the nut a skosh, then replace the retainer. DO NOT crank down the nut. This is about the simplest operation you can perform on a reel. Great reel BTW.

I have the BB1 Pro and it does not make any of these sounds. It doesn't click when shaked and is quiet and smooth on the retrieve. It gets beat up pretty hard when fished. I think I would have noticed something over the course of the past year.

I'm with Dodge , send it back.

The reel has centrifugal brakes that are hidged and free to swing.  They will swing around and make contact with the race and seat back against the spool making noise as the reel is shook or when the spool is spun and slowed to a stop with the reel held horizontally.

Although I agree with @Tatulatard and @PhishLI, I also agree with the others' opinion of sending it back -  Send it back and get a Tatula SV; then everyone is happy.

@newapti5That Tatula is over $200 right? i bought these Lews products because they were 50% off... And to @Tatulatard and @PhishLI i did some research just now into what you both posted and its making sense and seems alot of people have those sounds, even found a post of a picture from lews saying that sound is normal. so thank you both for giving me confidence back in this reel. Appreciate it.

Well, it depends on where you're looking I guess. JDM sites usually have Tatula SV for around $150, and if you don't want to buy from them, Amazon is selling a better Daiwa reel, Alphas SV, for $170:

The only noise I've had is from the brake casting only. The lube gets rid of it.no rattles or loose handles.

I've heard it on mine while slowly cranking the reel while fishing. I knew what it was immediately and didn't worry about it because I understand the mechanics of this braking system. This subject came up last year. I found the insert Lew's provides with the Hypermag while at a store and snapped a picture of it. I re-posted it in this thread. They're own insert describes this condition as something that may be heard on certain settings. It's not a problem according to the manufacturer, and is normal for the design whether you or anyone else hasn't noticed it themselves.

Peace.

Gotcha. I imagine when the plate is retracted and you have more clearance it may happen.
