quick day trip with a friend.  hope to get him on his first bird.  I bought a license "just in case", but it isn't overly important for me to get one.  my freezer is too full anyways.  luckily I have a few shotshells left.  he gets first shot, and I will shoot whatever thinks staying around was a good idea. :D

I prefer fishing, but this should be good.  it is a long drive for me, and I hope to fall asleep by 6:00PM.    I played with my calls all afternoon and annoyed my cat and dog..and probably all the neighbors

is my spring season the earliest one?  anyone else heading out?

Ours doesn’t start until Wed, April 12. I selected season C which starts on Wed, April 26. Normally go during season B, but there is so much snow on the ground I pushed it back a week this spring.

I don’t personally care to eat them. They aren’t bad, but they aren’t that good either.  They’re just blah. Lately I have found a home for it with a co worker when I fill my tag so I don’t have to choke it down.

To me, nothing says spring like the thunderous echo of a Tom gobbling in the early morning light.

Thunder chickens! April 15 here. My buddy says he’s got a new recipe that is awesome (I don’t hunt but I’m a skilled eater of food)

what we’ve done is past is cut them up in tiny kabob chunks and soak in Italian dressing for 24 hours then grill on kabobs with green peppers and onions

also we’ve used chick fil a copy recipe and fried nuggets

he won’t tell me the new recipe yet but I will report back

This has the makings of a good year for us.  We fenced off about 20 acres for wildlife and put in a food plot.  The turkey population has exploded.  Groups as large as 50 birds are being seen.  Season is still a ways off.  Good luck to you and your friend.

They will often group up into very large groups like that during the winter. Once more “spring” like conditions arrive, they will split off into smaller groups or singles. The most I’ve seen at one time while I was hunting them in the spring is about 15.

We have a solid turkey population here at the house.

I've not hunted them in a couple of years but always let a buddy of mine know when the gobblers sound off.

I always deep fried them in peanut oil, not bad.

Nice of you to help your friend get a bird. Hope you got one too. I’ll be going out this week. I’ll be hunting them with an airgun. I’ve gotten several each of the last few years, hope to keep the streak going. I breast them out and cut off the legs. I like them stir fried with snow peas, ****ake mushrooms, onions and ginger root

Airguns have taken off around here and those who've never shot one would be amazed by their accuracy.

My Air Arms is more accurate than any rim fire I own at 50 yards.

Also have an Airforce......and an air bow. Lol

I remember having so much fun hunting with a Sheridan Blue Streak .20 cal back in the day. Thing was rugged and very accurate.

Just about every year, I have this in my backyard. Unfortunately, we have a firearms ordinance in the city...so I can't 'collect' dinner out of my yard.

Can you shoot a hen in VA?  We can only take legal bearded males here in MN.

Bearded only during designated turkey season.

Hens can be shot during turkey / deer season.

I have a Hatsun .22 cal pellet rifle.  I tried for 3 seasons to take a bird. No success.  I went to take a tick and a bird came in. My friend picks up my rifle and hammers the bird in the throat and it lays down and dies on the spot.  It was funny and infuriating all at once.

‘’I took the air chamber apart to fix a seal not realizing that my hand pump will never get a 3500 psi tube full, starting from zero.  I’m dead in the water until I find a shop that can fill my reservoir. It is a PCP rifle.

I don't think the same broadheads are used for deer as for wild turkeys.  Maybe I'm wrong, but the archery hunters I know definitely use different broadheads on their arrows.

Archery hunting for wild turkey is extremely difficult.  Here in MN the average success for spring turkey with a bow is about 10%.  That means for every hunter that fills their tag, 9 others don't.  I have a couple friends who are avid archery hunters and neither one of them has taken a turkey with a bow yet.  Apparently they have to come extremely close.  And they rarely just stand still for a good shot either.  The advantage to using a bow here is that the season is much longer than with a shotgun.  If you use a shotgun (like I do), then you can only hunt for one 7-day season.  If you hunt with a bow, you can hunt for over a month.

My first 5 birds were taken with archery.  I used mechanical broadheads on them.

the funnest method by far.
