lynyrdsky1 Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 I'm looking at a 1995 Javelin 19ft with a single axle trailer for 5500. Is it worth the price? Sidenote: This will be my first boat, but I've been used to a 20 foot Champion with a 200 so I think I can handle it. Quote
bowfish12 Posted February 24, 2011 Posted February 24, 2011 You got a picture of the boat? Where's it located at? Quote

Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted February 25, 2011 Global Moderator Posted February 25, 2011 If you're set on it I'd at least try to talk them down quite a bit. A guy I used to fish with had a Johnson motor close to the same year/model as that one and even taking good care of it seemed like he had a lot of problems with it. Doesn't mean this one will be the same. I made what I consider a big mistake by not waiting and saving my money for a new boat. Instead I bought a 1992 Ranger with a 150 Mercury on it for 4,000. After putting over 2,000 into it I sold it the next year and used that money on a down payment for the boat I currently have. I didn't go buy a brand new Ranger or anything but my Lowe has more fish brought into it throughout the year than most 40k dollar bass boats. Plus it's lighter and easier to tow and the smaller 4 stroke motor does better on gas. Still a legal boat for any tournaments I've ever seen and much more affordable. 4k sounded cheap when I bought that Ranger several years ago, until I started having to fix it everytime I took it out . Carrington Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 that fin near the prop worries me lol, everytime ive seen those on a used bass boat it means that the boat has a hard time getting on plane or that it takes forever to get on plane. Just ask the guy about why its on their i guess. Quote
lynyrdsky1 Posted February 25, 2011 Author Posted February 25, 2011 Should I go as low as 2k or is that to low. Quote
GrundleLove Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Should I go as low as 2k or is that to low. Do what I did. Show up with a Bill of Sale and like 2500 CASH. and show that you have it in your hand. When I did that I got my boat for a decent amount less and he couldn't really refuse since I had the cash in my hand ready to give it too him. He was reluctant but seeing the cash he couldn't say no. ;D Quote
lynyrdsky1 Posted February 25, 2011 Author Posted February 25, 2011 Yes I think I'll try that. Thanks Quote
vapredhunter Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I agree with Carrington I would ask him about that fin and why he installed it. I have a 2000 model Javelin 18ft it hauls the mail without a fin and comes out of the hole like a rocket with only a 150. NADA on that boat says $4800 to $5400 I'd probley offer $3000.00. My Javelin was NADA 8400.00 guy was asking 8000.00 I got it for 6000.00 Quote

This could be due to a number of reasons, the worst being waterlogged wood. My buddy had a 1990 396 with a 175 that had a hard time getting on plane with the livewells full, 2 ppl, gear and full tank of gas. We think it could be due to water in the boat/wood. He traded that in for a 400, kept the same motor and has no problems getting on plane now. You need to check it out really good especially around the transom. The fin could be on there due to if the owner took 3-4 ppl fishing at a time, and could be on there because he believed he needed it after reading the product description. Quote
lynyrdsky1 Posted February 25, 2011 Author Posted February 25, 2011 http://memphis.craigslist.org/boa/2233669708.html here's a link to another boat I'm looking at. It is a 94 Aries 20ft with a 175 Evinrude around the same price. Never heard of the brand tho. Quote
vapredhunter Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Ok so the 19ft boat in question should weigh about 200 or 300lb more than my 18ft boat :. But it has 25 more HP then my 18ft so 6 in one hand half dozen in the other. My point was you should inquire as to why he put it on a boat, that if it is properly set up should run like a scalded dog!!!!!! I have fished on many different boats and I've never been on a Javelin that didn't scare the crap out of you. He may have put it on there to help with chinewalking or maybe he was pulling skiers. Perhaps it has the wrong prop on it and wont come out of the hole. Either way that boat shouldn't need a Whale tail with a 175 on it. Goodluck in your search, if you have any questions about Javelin shoot me a PM Quote
bowfish12 Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I assume you have a renegade 18 which is ~ 1200 lb. A 150 hp motor isn't going to have a problem getting that boat out of the water, or even a bout like a statros 285, that is ~1400 lb, up on plane. Looking at the pic of the boat he's asking about it looks to be a 400D. This boat is ~1600 lb, and rated for 225. If it is this model I can see why he needs the hydrofoil on. Quote
Carrington Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 btw, the only time a fin goes on my boat is if im taking my little brother wake boarding and i use the fin to stay on plane at lower speeds. But my boat pops up like nothing without a fin with a tourny load and its a 17 foot with a 115 hp on it. Quote

If it's a 389 then most likely it's got water in the boat/wood somewhere. My buddies 400te has a 175 on it and it pops right on up and that's 1500 lb hull, where as once we put water in the livewell of his 396 it would take forever to get up. Quote
vapredhunter Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 Huh I thought the 400DC was a dual console I must have missed the extra console in the pic. I thought it was 389 with a single console which is only rated for 175 hp. Guess you told me I was just trying to help out :-/ !!!!!!!!!!!! Goodluck again lynyrdsky1 Quote
lsufan334 Posted February 25, 2011 Posted February 25, 2011 I have a friend who had almost that same Javelin and I can tell you it will fish really small compared to what you have been fishing out of. I am used to a 2000 18ft Procraft and it fishes bigger than my friends 19ft Javelin. Besides that it is a GREAT boat and motor. Just fishes small. If that makes sense. Quote

Goodluck again lynyrdsky1 my mistake, I was wrong. : It would have to be the 389. I thought there was a single console 400D, but it was the TE I was looking at. Lynyrdsky1, look it over really good before you make a decision. Sorry vapred. :-[ Quote
StatosDadRI Posted March 1, 2011 Posted March 1, 2011 The fin also will keep the boat from porposing and will crusie at much lower speeds on plane. Is the owner a big boy and own all bass proshops.? Is the prop way to big? 2 sides to the coins but the other repsonses could be true as well Quote
