clemsondds Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 Been fishing for a little while and I got caught up a few years ago with doing braid to leader for everything. Now I'm switching to a variety...depending on the technique. So just curious what you all use for cranking? I've listened to lots of "experts" online lol...Lord knows they know a ton more than me though. I have heard Fritz uses braid for cranking, heard most say they use fluoro for obvious reasons (clarity, less noise, depth...) , and heard tacticalbassin talk about using both :fluoro for general cranking and then braid to leader if they are on a bite where the bass are on a big reaction bite where they need the bait to stop and start with precision. So after all that, what do you use and why? Thanks!! Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted March 19, 2023 Super User Posted March 19, 2023 I primarily use copoly for cranking, with Pline CX and Izorline Platinum being the 2 I use the most. I've also been experimenting with Defier and Defier Armilo but don't have much cranking time with them yet. The copolys are strong and handle well plus have a little stretch that I like when fishing treble hooks and for popping baits free from snags. I am a fluoro fan for a lot of techniques but it never seemed that beneficial for the shallow cranking I do. I would never use braid for this. 1 Quote
Woody B Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 I use mono for everything except really heavy baits. I would use mono for them too but I launched an Alabama rig into orbit with 12 pound mono. I've never used fluoro for anything....so I can't say anything good or bad about it. I believe "most" people use it for cranking. I don't know why. I'm happy with what I use, and not looking to learn anything. It would just cost money. The bait monkey sells line too. ? 4 1 Quote
GRiver Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 Fishing line use can be a personal preference. I went through the “braid phase “, eventually switched everything back to mono, except two rigs. Couldn’t’ stand the noise For crank baits, I like mono, it’s quiet and has a little stretch to it. Sometimes I have a heck’va hook set. 1 Quote
Mr. Bassin II Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 10#, 12#, or 10# FC. Situation determines which. Always Tatsu though. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted March 19, 2023 Super User Posted March 19, 2023 Straight fluorocarbon, InvizX or Tatsu; pound test depends on depth/style, but usually 12 (deep) or 15 (shallow-mid) pound. Quote

Super User casts_by_fly Posted March 19, 2023 Super User Posted March 19, 2023 I’m throwing all three this year. I like braid (no leader) on my lipless and light crank rod (7’ mh/mf). I’ll throw up to a dt10 on it, but mostly it’s a dt6 or smaller. On my smaller yet rod (6’6” m/mod) which is set up for jerkbaits and smaller cranks I’ve got 12# sunline mono. I’ve also got some red label 12# for when I want to crank bigger cranks later in the year. Quote

LonnieP Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 Been using McCoy 12lb Xtra clear copoly but just spooled up 3 of my crankbait reels up with 13lb Sunline Shooter Deffier to try out. Quote

Thanks For me, better sensitivity without sacrificing the elasticity of mono/copoly, or having to adjust rod action/power because of using braid…plus I can buy larger bulk spools and save money since I use the same line type for most all applications. Super User WRB Posted March 19, 2023 Super User Posted March 19, 2023 12# mono since the 60’s for crank baits. The past 5 years Sunline 11# Diefer Armilo mono. Reason higher knot strength per diameter the other mono and exceptional casting performance. When using crank baits you make more cast per hour then other lures and need smooth long distance casting line. Tom 1 Quote
JediAmoeba Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 8-10 lbs fluoro leaders with a 20lb braid main line. If I am deep cranking I usually have a 30' leader. If it's less than 10 feet, a shorter leader. Quote

Super User AlabamaSpothunter Posted March 19, 2023 Super User Posted March 19, 2023 12lb CXX for DDs which I totally suck at and working hard at changing 12lb Fluoro, or 14lb Sunline Natural mono for squarebills and medium runners. Quote
detroit1 Posted March 19, 2023 Posted March 19, 2023 As you can see, the choice is up to you, with no "real" advantage of any type. I use 12# mono on baitcasters, and 8# on a spinning rig that i throw smaller cranks or in bigtime winds. Why mono? It's works and what i have used for years. Is it the best choice? i don't know or care. Quote

Honestly just want to hear why you like having braid as your main line if you are running that long of a leader. Thanks Quote
