MiceNReets Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 Hey. For those that use the Gantarel Jr. What rod, reel (gear ratio/ipt as well) and line are you using to toss them? thanks Quote

Tatulatard Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 6 or a 7 gear fished slow on 20 lbs big game. I would go flouro but I also throw plopper 130s and other big topwaters on the same rod. The gantarel is slow rolled and paused when cast to the shore for big bass cruising the shallows in a pre spawn cycle and cast on points and worked more erratically in a flashy color with long pauses like a giant jerkbait also in early pre spawn. 1 Quote

I got some Gantarel JRs last year and didn’t put much of an effort into them. This year id like to put more of an effort. Didn’t catch a single fish on the lures. I did use braid so now I was just sitting here wondering if maybe I Should switch to fluorocarbon. Which is why I started this topic. I have an evergreen combat stick heavy. I was gonna use that but it’s rated up to 1.5oz. Thought it was 2oz for some reason. So now I’ll have to look at the Okuma TCS-a frog/swimbait rod to toss the Gantarel JRs. also picked up a Gantarel Jr dead rise. Well the Chibatrel dead rise but it’s the same thing. just wasn’t sure which of the many reels I have to use. Maybe ‘19 scorpion mgl? but please everyone keep the comments coming. 1 hour ago, Tatulatard said: 6 or a 7 gear fished slow on 20 lbs big game. It will keep the Jr's trebbles planted and absorb the fight from a big angry female without nuking the knot like flouro. Just go out in spring to where the bass spawn and throw the gantarel with a slow roll and pause retrieve. It's usually that 1st movement after the pause that the fish crush it. That dusk/dawn periods seems to be when the big females are most active. All my big fish come as the sun has just set. 1 Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted March 17, 2023 Super User Posted March 17, 2023 14 lb flouro. On the light side, but I’m not in heavy cover. even my rod is too light. But dang the bites are fun. 1 Quote

One year while fishing the Red river just below the Texoma Dam he slung my sisters glasses right into the river. We just sat there amazed, we couldn't believe he didn't hook my sister, just her glasses. After that my brother and I would jump on the ground to get out of the way of my dad when he would cast. I sold off my 705cb after buying it as it I found it could do everything it could and then some, I find it’s superb for chatterbaits and the bigger spooks. 1 Quote

MiceNReets Posted March 18, 2023 Author Posted March 18, 2023 Now I have an evergreen combat stick - jackhammer rod. It’s glass and rated up to 2oz. Would swimbaits work good with glass rods? Also how are whopper ploppers on glass rods? I haven’t tried that yet. Quote

I think it depends on how far you plan on throwing a whopper popper. my friend fires for the horizon and he uses a frog rod. he can get good hook penetration. me, not so much. that is a nice rod. When it gets softer with age, I use a short leader of stiff fluoro so the hooks don't get caught up in the line. Quote
