HenryPF Posted March 16, 2023 Posted March 16, 2023 Anyone use it for this purpose? Gonna throw it in perspective, stick it on a extendable painter' stick and sit my butt down while doing good ole fashioned bobber/lindy rig fishing in the backyard pond. I already have a shuttle/battery/tripod/painter's stick that reaches like 12ft, and I am thinking this will provide some great entertainment value. The echomaps pop outta their cradle from the boat. Am I crazy or just have too much disposable income? I figure it would be better than constantly playing on my phone or watching a bobber all the time and I can at least watch some bluegills swimming around. 1 Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted March 16, 2023 Super User Posted March 16, 2023 I can't hate on you for wanting to experiment with it and see. Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted March 16, 2023 Super User Posted March 16, 2023 I'm curious to see how this works. In principle it should work. The ponds around here have a ton of grass near shore so that's a consideration. You're also going to be carrying around a bunch of stuff. You'd probably want a float of some type. A live transducer on the end of a 12' pole is going to be too heavy to maneuver easily. maybe pool noodle or pipe insulation wrapped around the 12' pole end. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted March 16, 2023 Super User Posted March 16, 2023 Should work, as there are portable ice units, and I’ve seen DIY YT videos for making portable units. Only immediate limitations it seems would be heavy vegetation or similar around or just off the bank that would block the transducer signal. Very steep dropping banks could also create dead zones. Sounds rather fun though. Keep us posted. Quote
Super User WIGuide Posted March 16, 2023 Super User Posted March 16, 2023 Could make for some good entertainment. Like others have said, shallow vegetation could put a damper on it though. If you're planning on keeping the pole in a fixed position and cast into the sonar beam, perspective mode might be the best way to run it as it'll give you a wider area to look at. Just be prepared though, using this type of setup could bring some "Karen's" out of their houses yelling at you telling you it's boring to see you look at a screen while fishing! Instead you should be staring off into the wild beyond like only a true fisherman would and that will up their entertainment value apparently. ? Quote
Cbump Posted March 17, 2023 Posted March 17, 2023 I wouldn’t buy one specifically for this purpose but if you already have one (sounds like you do on your boat) It sounds pretty cool. If anything just to get more time behind It to learn more. A buddy of mine has two boats so he bought a plastic craftsman tool box and made a completely mobile Livescope setup. Gimble mount for the graph on top, ram ball for his pvc ducer pole, etc. It’s pretty legit. He just sets the whole thing on the deck. crappie guy mostly though Quote
HenryPF Posted March 18, 2023 Author Posted March 18, 2023 (edited) The pond in the backyard has no weeds or they nuke em dead cause aesthetics. Shore line is rip rap rock like most retention ponds and drops off to 7ft within 5 feet from shore. I have the shuttle for ice fishing from Precision Fishing, angle adjustable Transducer Mount, 30ah from Amped Outdoors, 93sv comes from the boat, and a painter's stick from Home Depot. Figured I could use a block o thick styrofoam maybe 6"x12"x3" with a slot cut down the middle to float the weight of the tranducer on the stick (also allows me to change angles of the stick). Pond is only 60' from the back door and I can throw my chair, tackle, this goofy setup in a radio flyer wagon and mosey on down. EDIT: I bought another one that was in my BPS sale basket (3rd one) for this purpose. I'll report back on my antics come summer. Edited March 18, 2023 by HenryPF Wasting Money... 1 Quote
