Wow! Pause the video at 29 seconds, and look at the coaches' faces. They're covering their mouths in disbelief.

 

I think most umpires try to do a good job, but they all make mistakes...just like the rest of us. That call did not look like an honest mistake to me. He decided on that call before the pitch was thrown.

Bad calls ruin games full stop.   That ump should never call a T Ball game again.   

 

We live in a world where the watcher has the tech on the screen to see a non biased K zone, I can't wait until balls and strikes umpires are eliminated.   I can't tell you how many games they've ruined I've watched over the years.

Exactly, and this happens shockingly in MLB.    The umps have histories and egos with batters.  Same with pitchers, you see the young guys in the bigs act animated when the ump gets a pitch horribly wrong, and then it only gets worse from there for them.

I used to watch a lot of baseball. I've been thinking about kind of watching some more, so I watched videos of umpires doing umpire things, and now I'm cured of wanting to watch baseball again.

If they can switch over to automation for all ball/strike calls, I'm in.  I just don't like replays, delays, overrulings, etc.  Not much of a replay fan....for most calls in most sports.  If you can fully automate the call, great.

94 strike cured me...I fell off the wagon a little in each of a few recent Octobers when Brewers were still playing late...but 3 to 6 games a year is a far cry from the 100+ I watched or listened to before 94.  

   I still tend to give umps the benefit of my doubt most of the time, but fully acknowledge that there were always a few that were willing to insert themselves into the contest.

A terrible call and like the announcer said, the umpire just wanted to go home. And then there’s the instant replay where “we just want to get the call right” and yet the New York Replay Center struggles to get it correct without making the umpire look bad. And I don’t want to get started on a “liberal” strike zone versus “getting squeezed” depending on who’s pitching or which half of the inning it is.

But hey, the game has provided many great family moments and entertainment over the years

Lol exactly, imagine thinking Degrom or Verlander have the same tight strikezone as a 23yr old just coming up.  

 

The adjustment of balls and strikes depending on how popular the pitcher or hitter is drives me insane.

In college, the pitcher has 30 seconds between pitches and the batter has 20 seconds to get in the batters box and get ready to swing.

 

If I am off by a few seconds, please correct me.

 

College baseball games now take between two hours and two hours and fifteen minutes, if not less, and they are smooth so you can just sit back and enjoy the game.

The 94 strike stung for me personally as an avid Reds fan.

The Reds had the best record in baseball only to have it erased.

The only record that mattered was after the strike was resolved...... ludicrous.

I went to a college baseball game last week that took over 4 hours, it all depends on what happens

there is a backstory to this vid that shows the whole sequence. The pitch before that was low and called a strike and the batter showed up the ump by pointing to the low level of the pitch with his bat and kept complaining so the next pitch the ump as said before showed the kid who the boss is and called a strike.

Thanks. Had to be more to the story. LSU pounded UNO last night 16-0, for its sixth shutout of the season.

Having played baseball for 12 years, I thought our umps were really good. I can’t remember a serious dispute.

The only game I ever got thrown out of was on a first base call playing softball later…And he threw me out for saying his call”wasn’t worth a crap”. ?

I didn’t want to mention Verlander but when you’re getting what appears to be 4” off the outside corner,  Hall of Fame calls…
