I was at a stop light on Midlothian Turnpike in Chesterfield County, Virginia this weekend, and noticed a good looking vehicle called a "Rivian."

I had never heard of this vehicle so today I looked it up on the Internet and here is the link.

https://rivian.com/support/vehicles

This is an electric vehicle. Looks good. But I have no idea about how this electric car operates and how long before the batteries die or catch on fire.

Just thought you guys would like to know about the Rivian.

they make those in my general area.  I see lots of them.

I like them, but they won't fit my life.  I need a longer bed and longer range for my kayak fishing.  I dont think ANY of them have caught fire, but I do like the stories.   our Tesla has also been flame free.  Tesla is still the game to beat for me.  ours does 340 miles if needed on a single charge.

I am on the waitlist for the Cybertruck.  500 mile range.  no lake is out of reach.  none.  none I want/hope to fish.

but in the meantime.  I will drive my very old Tacoma.  as a matter of fact, I am gonna get gas today.

Green pickup?  Saw one on 95 just north of Richmond a couple weeks ago.  Definitely a head-turner.  I was surprised I hadn't heard of it before.  Not an entry-level truck

when they were first announced..I think MSRP was $45k.  they backpedalled that like a politician caught with a porn star.  I dont know what it is now.

Interwebs says starts at 75-76.  But, also, that there's a waiting list.  No doubt that will mean a 10-25% premium in the short term.

Another coal fired vehicle? Neat

i had an electric golf cart in the late 1990s. I’d say the lead acid batteries would still charge up, it’s at my uncles house haha

Never seen one here.  I see a fair amount of Tesla and quite a few hybrids.  Can't say I've see this mythical beast called Rivian.

We see a bunch of them around here, both the truck and the SUV.  The truck has some neat features that they have designed in since they were coming from an electric platform base and the building a truck around it instead of starting from a gas truck and electrifying it.  They look decent, if a little 'marshmallow-y', aka rounded edges and a little puffed up.  The range is commensurate with the top end of the market.  Its definitely aimed at the truck buyer who only kinda needs a truck and not someone who is using a truck because they need the capability of a truck specifically.  Not to say the rivian isn't capable, that's just not who they are marketing it towards.

That is ballsy launching a boat that size that far back into the water.  No chance I'd even attempt it.

Ford invested in Rivian when they first emerged in the market. They have since sold their financial interest

Currently Rivian is experiencing supply chain issues.

* I guess it goes without saying if you’re gonna launch a boat like that it’s probably a good idea someone is in it.

I think Ford invested originally when they were in development of the Ford Lightning. When they were done learning what they wanted to learn about the technology, they sold.

I see a few Rivian's around here. I think they're ugly.

Sorry, but incorrect.  Rivian is only manufactured in Normal, IL.  I believe you may have their corporate offices however.

A friend of mine put a deposit on one. Price was $93K and one year wait. He got his deposit back a few months after placing the order.

On the back of a tow truck or on the shoulder?

Our first house cost $45K and we built new on the same lot in '00-01 for under $150K.  A tear-down around here is north of $500K now.

A friend has a Tesla Y.  I love it and am all in for electric, but I'd need a full size with longer range than what's available. We have solar and went 7 months w/o an electric bill last year, so it'd work for us.

Rivians look like Honda's Ridgeline to me.  Nice, but too small for me.

I have done a lot of research on electric vehicles...I am not a fan.

  • Not as environmentally friendly as advertised
  • Huge batteries requiring loads of rare minerals
  • What happens to batteries when you are done?
  • Range
  • Capability (i.e., towing a 12,000lb. 5th wheel?)
  • Access to charging stations

They are cool. They are super fast. Don't see one in my future any time soon.

I had heard how fast they are and tremendous torque for towing... but also heard once you tow - you'll need to re-charge which takes a long time approx every 100-150 miles!  Below is a related article from a Motor Biscuit magazine review:

"The Rivian electric truck, like all current electric vehicles, has an Achilles Heel: its range. Towing a trailer can slice its range in half, and recharging is often slower than advertised. It is not great at towing for long distances.

The specific Rivian R1T that TFL Truck tested had a 280-mile driving range. When they hooked the truck up to the 8,100 pound trailer it used about twice its normal power to drive around town: the R1T’s estimated range fell to 135 miles."

A low tow range is a deal-breaker for those of us that go a fair distance to our favorite lakes.

While I do agree with that sentiment, an 8100 pound trailer is ridiculously heavy.  I'd be interested in knowing what the mileage range is when towing a more reasonably-weighted boat like half that size.
