Anyone know best ways to attach rod holder to kayak?

Can't afford a new fancy-fisher-yak (sigh!).....I'm retro-fitting mine. Some one told me it can be iffy to drill in fibergass, tho! Thanks!

Sharp bit, don't force it, not too much speed, support it from behind. What kind of kayak are you talking about?

Thanks for the heads up   Mine's a "Calypso" made by LL Bean. It's really light-weight....only weighs 35 lb.

There are many different kinds, side mount, top mount, even a clamp on type that might work. Really research before you drill, mark it well with a sharpie when you are in your yak to get the best location.

This is a multiple rod mount by Scotty that you could mount right in front of your cockpit. You'd still need to buy the rod holders that attatch to the mount. Drilling the holes for the mount will not hurt your kayak, but if you want to take off stress you can take one of those place mats people use on their tables and cut it out to place between the mount base and your kayak. You would want to cut out a second piece for the underside of the kayak wall if you use washers and nuts. Before mounting anything on a kayak, think about how you fish and where you're arms are during flipping, casting, etc. Make sure you choose a mounting location where the holder will not interfere with any of your fishing motions.

Any decent brad-point bit should drill through fiberglass and other boat composites without a problem. The important thing, though, is to use stainless steel hardware to mount the rod holder or anything else on your kayak to prevent rusting.
