I think my favorite is a Rapala X-Rap Prop. That thing will catch the fire out of them around the spawn and gets some of the best blow ups.

I believe the average bass caught on this bait is greater than all others for me . Just a killer in the spring . Twitch it slowly or as quickly as possible and remain in contact with the surface . It also works as a competent wake bait .

Pity they're gone. I was wanting to order one. Does anyone know if there's a similar lure out there?

Very few of the baits mentioned are what I think of when someone asks about a prop bait.

IMO, a plopper is a group all it's own and so is a buzzbait. Just different baits designed to be fished differently.

The Yo-Zuri 3DB Prop is my favorite single prop, the Berkley Spin Rocket is my favorite double prop.

The buzz jet throws a lot of water and Ive caught lots of fish on them.  Both sizes work for smallies, spots and largemouth. I use the smaller one on calm days and the big one when there’s a breeze. Hope this helps

Man, now I want one...

Only problem its that it looks like candy for pike.

I'm partial to the following:

Devil's Horse - been fishing this since the 1960's with my Dad and Grandfather teaching me how to fish it. Still one of my favorites.

Hub's Chub Rattalur - I have caught some some huge Largemouths on this lure. I only use two colors - Black or Gold Chrome. Thankfully I still have a few. As far as I know they have been out of production for several years.

Heddon Baby Torpedo - This one can be extremely productive in the Black Bayou Marsh area around Houma, LA in the summer.

Buzz Bait - Black with Black Blade under low light or at night or White with Gold Blade when the sun is bright.

Whopper Plopper - I'm including this because it has been fairly productive but it's not my first choice when using a prop bait.

There is the Bagleys Bang-O-Lure spin tail . I never had one. They are the same basic design.

I'm torn between a Heddon Torpedo, and a Cordell Boy Howdy.

The South Bend Spin-I-Diddee was my first lure. I still own several of the old, wooden ones.

I feel like a WP buzzbait, and prop style bait are different enough to deserve individual categories

You aren’t alone. There are at least 3 of us.

I've beat this dead horse so many times already.  Its dead.  No point in trying to revive it.

I am surprised no old geezer didn't say Arbogast Sputterfuss. (i'm a geezer by the way). I don't consider a buzzbait as a prop bait because when you stop reeling it just slowly sinks.  I have caught a few on  spybaits and tiny torpedos but never fished with a dual prop-jerkbait style. Maybe that will change. I know buzzbaits work, but i would throw whop-plop instead.

Guess I am the only person who thinks that the whopper plopper sucks? I had high hopes for it but a single blade of grass stops the tail from spinning. Tiny torpedo I can be dragging a 4' limb on the hook and the blade still spins.

I don't hate the Whopper Plopper.  It's definitely caught me some fish.  But the Heddon Torpedo catches more fish and in tougher conditions.  It's about 4x's as versatile.  I'll often start with a Torpedo to find out what kind of mood the fish are in, and then switch to something else that fits that mood better.

The Torpedo works well with pauses, which the Whopper Plopper does not.  It also works well with a medium pace, steady retrieve.  The Whopper Plopper covers that small patch where you're not quite fishing at buzzbait speeds, but need something faster and louder than a Torpedo.

But all things being equal, if the buzzbait bite is on, that's my choice.  You can cover more water, faster, and it seems to draw fish in from further away.  Plus, it handles a little bit of chop better.

All time biggest string ever came on this plug: Heddon Dying Flutter in Baby Bass color. Alas they don't make them any more.  Original was made with cedar.

i've taken a few choppo fish..and a few W-plopper fish.  i love casting them Faaaaar and chugging them back thru weed channels.  the anticipation is addicting.  i am not totally succesfull to be honest.  and it is a no brainer cast and reel bait.

i think i will try the ChopKicker next.  change it up.  EVERYONE is flinging a whopper plopper on the Delta.

@Captain Phil, I just bought your favorite lure. How do you fish it? Twitch? Walk it? Steady retrieve?

@Darth-Baiter, I'm thinking of buying your Chopkicker. Until you mentioned it, I didn't know that such a thing existed. It looks great. Expensive, but great and by great, it looks like it would make a sound that most bass have never heard.

Whopper plopper by far. But I do like using the buzz jet at night, idk if it counts as a prop bait. The WP has caught me a lot of big fish. My Pb smallie 6lbs 9 ounce came on the 90 the first time I used it. That was after a 10

hour day of not catching anything
