All of my LC Pointer 65s have hooks in need of replacement after catching tons of fish and either getting a bit bent out or rusted from being in kayak and me not being great at drying them out before storing them back in box. So, what size and brand replacement trebles do you recommend?

also thinking of buying a bunch of different sizes for my other jerkbaits, squarebills and Rapalas because a lot of em are battered as well. Suggestion on a range of sizes I should get to cover most baits? Most are shallow to mid divers less than 1/2 ounce; I don’t really throw any deep divers or other bigger crankbAits.

Also: anyone prefer EWG trebles for this? Short shank? What would be most universal to keep it simple? Or does it really depend on the bait?

Thanks!

For Pointer 65's specifically - #8 round bend lightwire trebles, I prefer VMC for the brand.  I personally don't like EWG's or short-shanks on jerkbaits, but others do.

#6's and #4s will cover probably 75% of your typical hardbaits.  Add in some #2's for the larger baits and #8's for the smaller ones and you'll have 99% of it covered.

If you use short-shank EWG's you can usually go up by 1 size on most baits if you wanted a little more hook...But a lot of it is preference.  EWG's scratch the bait a little more and as a result, the points dull a little faster (just my experience/opinion).

I use the 65’s and have literally caught thousands of smallmouth on them. If you replace the hooks with anything larger than the #8 short shank treble, it will not suspend properly. Using a long shank or stepping up a size really makes finding hooks easier, because there aren’t many #8 short shank choices out there. But the bait will sink. If that doesn’t bother you, do what you want.

So, if you were gonna get replacements for the Pointer 65, you’d recommend short shank #8, if I can find em? Or something else? Any particular brand? By far my favorite crankbait. BE Gill slays in local ponds.

I don’t actually remember which hook I used last but it was definitely the #8 short shank. I know I had a hard time finding them and bought a bunch so I wouldn’t have to search for them again. I’m not that particular about my hooks, stick with a name brand if you can

The Duo Speahead Ryuki #8s are what you want for the 65sp.  The Spearhead hooks are kind of hard to find, the hookup might have them.  If you just to stick to TW then go with Ichis.   Ichikawa makes an excellent light wire hook in a round and ewg style as, but I dont know the exact size of their #8.  Those hooks would work well for lighter cranks or topwater that you would throw on spinning gear or light casting gear.  With bigger cranks I definitely prefer short shank trebles or round bend during the coldest parts of winter.

Got a pack of 18 off fleabay. Found a $5 coupon so $21 shipped. Not bad and frankly I’d pay double to keep my LC Pointer 65s in tiptop shape. 100% biggest confidence bait for me. Outfishes every crankbait in my shallow crank box. Very light so definitely gotta use the spinning rod which is fine. Thanks for the tip!!

You ever try a Rozante 63?  Its close to the 65sp but the rozante has a weight transfer system that makes it cast really well.

They come stock with #10 spearhead hooks.  Its a slow float like the vast majority of other sp labeled JBs.  If you swap out the 10s for #8 ryukis its much closer to a true suspend.

If I can, I try to replace the hooks with the same size and type.  Then I don't have to worry about making the jerkbait too heavy or too light, and messing with the action.

Interesting! I’ll try and pick up a few. Thanks!

See if you can find some Daiichi Death Traps in size 8. I forget where I bought my last set of hooks for the Pointer 65sc.
