Transom tie downs

Sounds like you need to come watch me do it then.  30 seconds?  Holy hell god forbid it should 20 seconds longer.

 

The only point I'm trying to make here is that they work perfectly fine and I'm not going to toss a fully functioning pair of tie downs away and install new ones until the perfectly functioning set fail on me.

I know I made that mistake in my post. I know "boat buckle" is just the brand name and they make multiple types of tiedowns, but when I hear boat buckle I jump to the assumption that it's their popular ratcheting transom straps.

Wish I could use those, but due to the type of trailer I have, there is no place to attach them. Frame section is over two feet forward of transom, would have to crawl under the boat to get to those.  Towards the stern is a big roller assembly that tilts, no where to attach the retractable units.

I was having issues with the straps that have the  "quick release" over center lever type of holdown, not the ratchet units.  These over center type always come loose for me, goin to switch to the ratchet style version and see how they do..

On my rig the attachment angle is very close to (if not) straight up vertical.

Rebuilding the trailer, when I set the bow-stop and mounted the bunks, I purposefully made it so that the transom is supported on the bunks (no overhang), and the rear trailer cross-brace was about 2" forward of the transom...so snugging it down makes the boat want to go forward on the trailer.

This is a little off topic but I converted a 12' duck boat trailer to a 14' john boat trailer by adding two feet to the tongue and adjusting the bunks. Prior to adding the two-foot extension to the tongue I had a two-foot overhang also. My concern was having the boat and motor hanging unsupported off the back of the trailer. 

 

The total cost was less than a hundred bucks and it resulted in a much more stable trailer. 

 

In response to the OP, I just replaced similar tie-downs. My new ones were coming loose also but I think my problem was that the new straps were stretching. Now they seem to be holding tight after a few uses.

Mine isn’t vertical, so when I switched to the sides and vertical it worked instantly and has for years

Retractable ratchet for me.  Easy to install and ultra convenient.
