What insurance company are you using for your boat, and why did you choose them? It's almost time for me to renew my insurance, and I'm just curious about what else is out there.

I have State Farm and from a Tbone fiasco year before last I could not recommend them to anyone, ever.

State Farm...like a good neighbor.  Yeah, right.  They dumped my homeowners insurance right before hurricane season last year.  Paid my premiums on time for 12 years and never made one claim...It's hard for me to put into words my feelings for that company.  >:D

I use progressive for my boat insurance.  So far, so good.

State Farm. Never made a claim so I never had an issue. Whatever company you go with make sure you go over the coverage and get what you need. Don't take the agents word that it's all covered. I also have the house and cars insured with them.

I also have State Farm at present, but plan to switch to BoatU.S. policy as they insure any age boat and it's equipment for what it would cost to replace it, not the industry standard replacement value.

I added to my Allstate Auto and have not had an issue and it seems to be cheaper than most.

Insurance is usually cheaper if you "bundle" your home, auto/truck, boat and whatever with one company, or through one agent.

The agent may be more important than the company. A reputable, independent agent will know where and how to save you money. In addition, they know which companies are best at paying claims and which are, ahem, shall we say, reluctant to pay claims.

An independent agent wants and needs your business. A company might prefer losing your business, if they can get out of paying a claim that will more than offset any premiums you are likely to pay in the future.

Since an agent doesn't pay claims, their priority is retaining you as a customer so they get their commission, ergo, your satisfaction is of the utmost priority. Not so with the companies.

I had Allstate for Auto, Home and Life Insurance.  I added liability boat insurance for my old boat in 2001.  They had to issue a waiver to add my new Stratos 294XLE with 200 HO Etec.  The boat is faster than they would normally insure.  It is insured for $30,000 and costs about $350 a year.  I really like my agent and he provides good customer service.

This. A good agent is golden. You get what you pay for.

I forgot to mention in my last post the Nitro dealer said I couldn't leave there with my new boat without insurance so I'm guessing it may be a Pennsylvania requirement. I was told a boat and trailer package over 3,000lbs requires trailer brakes as well.

Did you finance the boat?  If so, that's why you couldn't leave without insurance.  No different from a lender requiring you to carry collision insurance on a vehicle.

States (most of them) require you to carry liability insurance to protect others from the mayhem you may cause in order to register a vehicle and/or trailer.

I had State Farm for over 20 years.  Still have them for homeowners and automotive.  Unfortunately,  I had what they felt like was an inordinate number of claims on my boats, and received a notice of non-renewal.  I talked to my local fiberglass repair shop.  Obviously, I knew them well.

They ranked State Farm as No. 1, American Family as No. 2 and Progressive as No. 3.

I went with Progressive for a significant savings.  Fortunately, I have had no claims so can't vouch for that experience.

If you have a relationship with a shop, I suggest you talk to whomever handles insurance claims there.  May be different in your area.  I in Kansas City.
