As I get further and further down the road, the value of my time on the water increases more and more.

So while getting a discount on the tackle I use is nice when it happens,

the reality is that savings, pales in comparison.

And if you squinted a little after reading that, you'll see.

Yep.  I'm too busy to be chasing a few pennies off of something.  If I want something I'll buy it.  If it's expensive I'll save up a while then buy it.   I buy most of my stuff local.  These people are working selling stuff to feed their families, same as I do repairing vehicles.  I don't purposely pay them more, but I don't take food off their table trying to get a deal.   I value their friendship, and the fact I can walk in and look at something before I buy more than a few percent discount.

It was more of an asset liquidation rather than a sale.  You won’t see that one again.

Asset liquidations are sales. I will say that regularly scheduled predictable "sales" with big discounts are silly from a sellers point of view, random reward is a thing.

Why would I do that? You said Destroyer for $280. Calling up the local shop and asking for 20% off would get me one for $400. Not really the same thing.
I’d pay $280-$300. I’m not paying $400-$500.

To address your original post, no one I know values any fishing equipment based off msrp. Or guns. Or golf clubs. Or cars. It’s the price you can actually get It for that matters.
When someone comes on a forum and asks what’s the best Rod I can get for $200, I highly doubt they care about msrp.

Specifically I said “JDM websites none of this matters. The MSRP on a new Bantam is ~$230 and a MB Destroyer ~$280.”

JDM refers to Japanese Domestic Market. If you’re interested in P5s that are sold in Japan they have been as low as $230 through Japan Lure Shop in the last year. This isn’t me obfuscating the truth it means if you’re cool with JDM Metaniums, Bantams, Zillions, Steez, Exprides and so on they are on deep discount because of the value of the dollar vs yen.

I never said a brand new rod that dropped a month ago which is only sold in the USDM will be on sale in Japan for half off. I paid $400 for an XBites and Teq when they were new because I wanted to try them. It’s listed in the price paid comparison.

The entire point of this post isn’t to sit here and say this is worth X or not worth Y. It’s about when comparing the value of a rod or reel the price it goes on sale for 4-5 times a year should be the baseline.

Is an NRX+ worth twice what a Legend X is? When you use the same math to compare an Expride and Champion Extreme HP are you getting the best bang for your buck? What do you all think?

No, the NRX is not worth twice what a Legend X costs but I don't buy all my fishing equipment with getting the best value as my #1 priority.  I'm willing to pay double for a rod if it's 25% better for certain applications.  I have paid $500+ for my bottom contact and finesse  Daiwa and Loomis rods with the understanding that I could get a great but inferior rod for half the price.  But fishing is my passion and I LOVE my high end rods so I treat myself to the best I can buy.  This is one of the few areas in my life where I take this approach.

My only takeaway is where do you find a Steez AGS for only $385? That seems a bit too aggressively discounted...

Summerland Outdoors, a site I can’t mention, and ALF had a stacking promo where you got more than 20% off being an elite member.

Sometimes the sites catch the discounts and sometimes they don’t. Pure ran multiple 50% codes this holiday season and a large number of members used them. I’m still not sure they were intended to be out there that long, or pure just wanted to move some new Abu products.

I totally believe it’s even more than that. When you roll your own blanks, and only buy the guides and reel seats the overall cost per rod has to be super low.
