A while back I bought a Daiwa Elite 7’3” Randy Howell dropshot/underspin rod and a Stradic 2500. I don’t use spinning gear often but thought I wanted a “higher end” setup than what I had.
Is It weird that I just do not prefer that setup at all over my Daiwa Exceler/AirdX combos. So much so that I’m meeting a guy to sell It today. It’s too long, too heavy, the Stradic was too large even at 2500.
To me the AirdX is one of the best values in spinning rods.

I have 2 Dobyns Champion spinning spinning rods, a 732 and a 733. These are made from leftover Champ Extreme blanks and I thought I’d really like them. I’ve only used them half a dozen times and the 733 (medium) isn’t too bad, but I absolutely don’t like the 732 (medium light). I have a 25 y/o 6’ St. Croix M/L Legend that I much prefer over either of the Dobyns. I’m hoping the Dobyns will grow on me. I love all of my Dobyns baitcasters. Go figure.

I'm in the same boat. I started drop shot with a 6'M rod. So when I try a proper 7' ML rod for drop shot I can't get used to it, they feel too heavy  I was searching everywhere for the right rod and just gave up on proper drop shot rods  Think I'll try a 6'8 M expride next.

Not weird. Only you know what feels good to YOU.

I have some higher end setups. And for whatever reason, I enjoy fishing with my Dobyns Sierra 734 as much, if not more, than some of my more pricey sticks.

I don't think it's weird. I've felt similarly about some of my rods and reel. They're nice and you can tell they're good quality but are they really worth x amount of dollars more than some of my more affordable gear? Not at all. That's my conclusion. I'm just as happy and comfortable with my cheapest setup than I am with my most expensive. Sometimes I regret not getting the cheaper gear.

I don't know about weird, but I do know I really don't like long spinning rods, 6'6"-6'10" is plenty for me.

I think that’s It. My AirdX rods are 6’6” I think.

I do have some highish end casting gear  that I love!

When you spend a lot of money on a rod and reel it should feel superior when you hold it and you should feel superior to other anglers that have cheaper equipment.  If this is not happening there’s something wrong.   You might try spending even more money and if that doesn’t work you may want to seek psychological help.  It’s very important to maintain a healthy placebo effect.  ?

I know you’re being facetious but I’ve never tried to feel superior to other anglers. However, I do enjoy using nicer gear usually. Do I catch more fish because of It? Maybe not. But I’m usually more confident which counts for something.
This particular combo just didn’t work for me.

I think it's a bit weird - I think you were lacking the proper balance. I always recommend trying out specific reels with the rod you want to pair it with.

I only use 2 setups shorter than 7' and they are both casting setups for jerkbaits/small topwater. I really don't like spinning reels though and unless all hell breaks loose, I don't take them with me.

I don't think it's weird. I'm not a fan of long heavy spinning rods either. The longest spinning rod I have is 7' and even then, I prefer my shorter 6'6" to 6'9" ML and M rods.

My absolutely favorite spinning setup is a 6'9" ML Fenwick Elitetech Smallmouth rod with an old school Pflueger president with the wood knob.

I rarely use spinning as well. Probably why it’s easier for me to be ok with the cheaper setups.
And you’re right. It was definitely unbalanced.

I don’t think you get many to disagree with you on the Fenwick.  That rod is a favorite of so many anglers it’s silly.

One of my fishing buddies sold his NRX+/Stella spinning combo this year, because after trying that combo, he still preferred the 13 Fishing rod he luckily fished out of the river bottom last season, which had a broken handle and a grinding Pflueger reel on it.  True story. So your case is not weird at all to me.

Anything the "PrOs" like I generally don't.

Stupid thickHeavy wire hooks...

(I want to use lighter line and softer rods to cast further, let it sink deeper and look more natural.

Super heavy overkill line techniques

Grossly underrated usdm fishing line lb tests that is misleading....

20lb drag reels on casting equiptment that are not smooth

Gimmicky baits or baits that don't seem to even be tank tested before put on the market.

Super long rods

Anything over 7ft is generally uncomfortable, expecally bank angling.

The only thing I do like is a bigger size spinning reel, because it manages the line better than smaller sized reels, however this is only for heavy .009 or .010 inch fishing line which really is pushing it on spinning in the first place. True 6-8lb or braid2leader I use 2500 or 2000 sized reels.

This is why I like jdm, because they don't push all this nonsense into alot of their equiptment, ill listen to the guys that have survived on an island eating fish for thousands of years...

It's probably the length of the rod.

My longest rod is 7'2 and it gets used the least.

I must be in the minority... the casting rods I use most are:

Tatula 7'1" MH
Tatula 7'6 H
Tatula 8'0 H
Tatula 7'9" XH
Tatula Elite 8'0 XXH
(2)Tatula Elite 6'9" ML
Tatula Elite 7'3" MH
Tatula Elite 8'0 MH Glass
St. Croix Premier 7'0" M Glass
Dobyns 7'4" UL BFS
Kast King Speed Demon Elite 7'6" MH
Kast King Speed Demon Elite 7'0" M Crankbait
Cabelas Tournament ZX 7'0" Crankbait
Cabelas XML 7'4" H Frog
Sixgill Kranken 7'6" MH Crank
6th Sense Milliken XH 7'9"

Some of them would be longer if they made them longer.

If it works for you go for it I would too if I fished on boats more often but it's so expensive to take them out here

I only have one casting rod under 7’ and it’s for jerkbait. Everything else is 7 plus with my c-rig rod being 8’.

But the spinning rod I’m talking about in this thread was too long and too heavy.

For me spinning rod length depends on the technique. If I'm dropping on them I think the shorter rod is easier to keep the bait in the cone and easier to flip into docks ect.

For the fairly clear water here and the pressure they have on them, If it's some thing I'm casting like a small swim bait I want to get it as far away from the boat as I can and I think a 7ft3 -7ft 6 has some advantage .
