I just took my CPR and first aid certification training for work at the South Dakota safety council last week. The instructor had been an EMT for 15 years around Minneapolis and also outside of Sioux Falls SD a town of about 200,000. Somehow we got on the subject of personal safety and he said I'm willing to bet 80% of you have a gun in your truck or on you now, and if not you should. We all chuckled and the other guys nodded. Bet I was the only sumbitch not packin.

I couldn't imagine working LE or EMS in a major city.  I'm sure it's against policy, but I'd sure want to be carrying.

The jungles are made of concrete these days, I guess that's why this story is shocking to most of us.

I live in Arkansas.  I have a CC Permit and use it a lot.  Arkansas also allows Open Carry with no permit required;  not unusual to see citizens openly packing, even in a Walmart.

I believe that once the battle begins, it's too late to prepare for it;  be prepared.

Sounds like an alkie with a mental disorder.  FL guy again.  What a shock.  The whole nation sees us as a bunch of godforsaken gun-toting bubbas or unhinged rubes an inch away from insanity.

Interesting that an internet search doesn't find anything like this.  OP has a link to a news article or something concrete?

I don't carry a gun.  Many people I know do. I do have one in my home.  I would rather let "godforsaken gun-toting bubbas" carry guns than be at the mercy of criminals.  My guess is most of our critics carry guns themselves or have private security that does. It's easy to deny the right's of others when you keep yours.

I’ve seen nothing about this on the 2 FB Headwaters groups I’m on.
As far as carry, if you fish some of the out of the way places I have, you’d be a fool not to. Just driving to some lakes will take you down roads that if you were to break down, you’d be at the mercy of whomever drove by.  I’m not putting myself in that situation without protection.

Man, that place is turning into a looney farm.....and it used to be an ordinary farm lol There's more drama coming from that place than almost any other spot. Those guides are thick, gettin thicker by the week, month...they just keep jumpin on the "I wanna make some money" bandwagon, posting on facebook 100 fish days, 200 fish days, 13 pounders, easy 10's.....one big giant shiner soak box that suckers many  to pack up and head for the sunshine state....I mean, who the heck wouldn't? Lotta of it is true. Great fishing. Great guides. Some good. Some bad. Some very bad! Very territorial. Some even think they own that place and are ready to protect by whatever means what they feel is rightly theirs. For example: all over Headwaters and all over Kenanville.....in fact, just about all over the place out there is LOADED with plastic PVC poles staking out the guide's bait drops. Go near one and they just might go ballistic. They also gunning at the boat ramp. Wanna see real ZOO lol. Hit that boat ramp. There's been fights, arrest, threats and guns drawn.....it's getting worse out there, so bad that I don't even fish it much anymore. I mean, I fish out of a yak and those guys in Nitro's are floored 250hp wide open on that lake only 2 feet deep lol. It's gonna dry up one day soon. The hydrilla gonna wipe it out else FWC just gonna shut it down and put it back like it was before it opened, nice and quiet and calm. Gonna take shots fired and some innocent person killed over stupid crap like we have seen or heard about. Bunch of folks acting like children out there, like Romper Room. Maybe Johnny Morris will buy it and turn it into an "adult" resort lol.

Now where we were staying in Blue Cypress there was a murder scene at a residence along the highway on our way to the cottages.  We passed it everyday.  Command center, vans, police cars, etc. One lane of the highway shut down.

I ran into that scene fresh the night it was discovered, heading out to Kenansville. Looks like a body was dumped on the side of the road, that or hit & run. Never heard much details. I know when I was coming back they had setup a tent fortress around the crime scene.

^That would scare me.^ I've shared big water with ships. I've paddled beside ocean going vessels and river barges longer than aircraft carriers, but those big vessels are piloted by sober professionals. Weekend boaters with a bellyful of beer scare me more than the 1000-footers.

Great comparison! It's more the way they come around corners and bends, like lightening. Add beer to that and it spells disaster. Hard to say why on earth they need to go so fast out there. It's literally 3 feet deep in entire lake except the canals.

@Zcoker I know manatees get clobbered and I assume that they're just one of many Florida critters that do, especially with high speed boats in shallow water.

My general rule is if I feel like I need to carry to go fish a spot, I just don’t go fish that spot. I have better things to risk my life on.

Word from my LEO friend is that it was a buried body from a murder in Tampa.  I haven’t heard from him on the op’s story.

It wouldn't surprise me. I grew up over there in Tampa and have encountered many such stories. Wonder how in the heck they found it? It's not like a busy sidewalk....it's smack dab in the middle of nowhere!

My guess would be someone got pinched red handed for something else and wanted to reduce his stint.

Yeah, it's a rough life for some of these manatees around boat traffic. Many are scared up badly, white crisscrosses across their tops. They're just so casual and hard to see, kinda floating around like giant logs. Boats just don't see them. Best thing to do is follow the speed limit in manatee prone areas to prevent hard hits. They'll usually shy away very slowly from a slower moving craft.

They are very friendly, even the little babies lol

I have guns.  I don’t want to CC any of them. I am almost fanatical about my surroundings.

if you’ve seen me shoot, my method is better.  I ran a tiny portion of my brothers gun course at his job and “me sucking” was an understatement.  I imagine (100’s of) hours of practice to get proficient.  I’d hit something I wouldn’t want to hit, or hesitate.
