This is not a paid endorsement. The old commercials were the best. I think the guy gets hung up and pulls a stump out of the water. I was like "dad! We need that line!" 1 Quote

Everytime i see a 3rd or 4th gen ram they look like this and it makes my 2004 f150 seem not so terrible by comparison despite being the worst truck to ever exist. "Yeah it may be time for new cam phasers and timing chain again at only 130k but at least it doesn't look like that". 1 Quote
Super User dodgeguy Posted February 25, 2023 Author Super User Posted February 25, 2023 Cams on Rams go bad from to much idle time and lack of oil change. Phasers hardly ever go bad. I've done a handful. A little wax and that truck is good to go. Truck would have done better with a good rustproofing when it was new and every few years after. Quote

It started rusting at 4. Dodge would not cover it because he said he put snow and sand bags in bed to weigh it down in winter. Just after the 7 year mark (less than 50,000 miles), he went to start it and the steering column had rusted to point it came off of the frame holding it. He got out the truck and the column and half the bottom was on the ground. He called to have it towed and when the tow truck showed up, it fell apart in two and the engine mounts busted out, leaving it in pieces. He had to have it loaded with a crane on to a flatbed. Last Chrysler product our family ever bought. All car manufactures make a bad one but this thing was legendary. 2 Quote
padlin Posted February 26, 2023 Posted February 26, 2023 I’ve noticed that I get prompted to post reviews right after I buy a product, like within a week. I haven’t come up with a valid opinion within a week, if I were to post one it’d just be initial impressions, which I’ve done on occasion. I’ve tried posting reviews after I’ve had time with a product, like 6 months, and the vendors sites won’t let me do one. have also seen reviews for multiple products from the same manufacturer mixed up. You might be looking at one specific rod, say Loomis, but find reviews for any of there rods mixed in. Another big one is when a company changes hands, quality can suffer when an equity firm buys a private company, or a small company gets eaten by a big corporation. I hate when a good restaurant changes hands and goes down the toilet, folks still see all the great reviews from the original, same goes for good products. I’ve started looking at the dates of reviews. 1 Quote

Yep, and a significant number of the reviews are done almost immediately after receiving the purchase. Useless. 1 Quote

Was it a plow truck ? Why wasn't it undercoated ? Chevy and Ford rust also. I see everyday how these trucks are treated and severe rust is usually caused by abuse. Was the vehicle ever washed and waxed ? Quote

Was the vehicle ever washed and waxed ? My father-in-law was a Mopar guy. He passed away just a year ago. He had a 72' Dodge Demon. Every family member on his side drove a Chrysler product. Anything from 90+ was bad. He was certified Chrysler mechanic but worked as a train repair/rebuild mechanic. His father worked at the Chrysler foundry for over 35 years. He owned numerous muscle and drag cars. His mom and brother worked at the parts plant. He drove this truck 10 miles a day but took the Demon out or one his Harley out from time to time. He wasn't one to travel. Also this truck was parked in a garage most of the time. He drove an 82' (maybe) Dodge Ram for over 20+ years prior to the truck I am referring too. After Chrysler refused to warranty the newer truck, he did some body work on it but the underside was always cleaned during his weekly car wash. His wife's 2010 Honda Civic did not have a drop of rust on it and it was parked outside. She passed away the year before he did. That car is still being driven by her son. If you want a list of the dead, under 5 year/100,000 mile cars they had, I can send it to you but it serves no purpose here. Quote

I was referencing the 5.4 3v Ford for the cam phasers and timing chain. Also let me know what wax you use that makes metal re-materialize from rust holes. I need that. A lot of it. Quote

Any scratch should be immediately touched up. Undercoating protects the backside and frame. For some reason dealers stopped selling it.i knew a guy who mixed used engine oil and diesel fuel and used it as undercoating. His work trucks never rusted. Quote
