GregN Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 Hi Folks - just unboxed a brand new Shimano Stradic 3000 I ordered online. I just screwed on the reel handle to the reel body and there is slight "wooshing" sound that can be heard when cranking the reel. There reel is buttery smooth and there are no sticking points during the rotation of the spool. I've never owned a worm driven reel before; is this noise normal for this type of reel, or should they be dead silent? Unfortunately, I don't have any local stores that sell these reels to compare with other than Dick's and they are sold in a clam shell package now. I'd appreciate any feedback Thanks, Greg Quote
PressuredFishing Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 Jdm? I have a diawa tatula with the same thing, and a light scuffing at one part of the retrieve brand new out the box. I decided it wasn't worth the hassle to ship it back to Japan so I just have been using it. The light scuffing sound got quieter with use and I put grease on the sshift. Sometimes they come Dry out of the box, sometimes they just aren't all the same. Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 It could be a bearing, or it could be dry. I got a dry Metanium with a bad bearing and for a little while I thought I had a dud gear set. Quote

I might be traveling past a BPS in another week or two. I'm thinking I'll just take it in and see if other reels behind the counter are similar. Greg Quote

Crankin4Bass Posted February 25, 2023 Posted February 25, 2023 Welcome to the forum Greg. I’ve had this happen with a stradic and other shimano spinning reels. I retuned the first one and had the same sound on the next one too. Someone suggested putting a drop of oil on the spool shaft. I removed the spool and put a drop of oil on the spool shaft, put it back together and that took care of the wooshing sound. Quote

Solution T2DM Posted February 27, 2023 Solution Posted February 27, 2023 My 3000 kind of did the same thing when I first got it, I exchanged it for another one and it was the same thing so I figured it's just a new reel and I just need to use it and after using it for a while all the 'weird noise' went away. Mine now is so smooth I bought another one but in a 1000 size, exact same thing with my Vanford 3000. New reels need a little break-in period IMO. 1 Quote

As this was my most expensive reel purchase to date, I was hoping for butter smooth and silent... There is prob nothing wrong w reel, but ill check out a couple in the store and go from there GREG Quote
