chall59 Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 Hey there, guys. I am an inshore fisherman from South Louisiana who likes to get insight from the bass world to use in saltwater applications. I am trying to find the "perfect" jerkbait rod for targeting speckled trout down here. My priorities would be: 1. Long Casts 2. Moderate Fast-Fast action 3. lighter I am looking for something that can make long casts on shallow flats but has a little give when fighting those bigger fish. Lighter/stiffer would help because my shoulder gets a little tired after ripping a jerkbait all day. I guess I am trying to find the sweet spot between soft enough to handle treble hooks but stiff enough to be able work the bait efficiently. Maybe that is impossible but what else does a gear junkie have to think about lol The jerkbaits I mostly use are Shadow raps, Shadow wrap Shad, mirrodine 17mr, 27mr, Jackal rerrange 110, etc. Thanks for the help! Aaron_H Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 The Shimano GLF 7'0" Medium should work well. It's rated as a fast action, but it's a composite blank, so should load well on the cast and it definitely has enough bend to handle the trebles. I've played with them quite a bit just never thrown them inshore, I would feel confident throwing those presentations on it. It was designed for inshore targeting reds and trout. Quote

Super User Dwight Hottle Posted February 24, 2023 Super User Posted February 24, 2023 You never said if your looking for a spinning rod or casting rod. Kistler makes a 7-0 & a 7-3 in Power 3 LMH casting & a 7-0 & 7-6 in Power 3 LMH spinning rods The KLX is on sale for $197 & the Helium. They are rated 3/16 to 5/8 but I can tell you from experience they will handle baits up to & including 1 oz. That was verified by Trey Kistler the owner. The top of the line Z Bone is on sale for $397. Quote
Super User Further North Posted February 24, 2023 Super User Posted February 24, 2023 If you want long casts, why not go to a longer rod? Quote
Super User Chris at Tech Posted February 25, 2023 Super User Posted February 25, 2023 Based on my experience, I think the Avid Inshore lineup would do well for this purpose. I noticed a definite increase in crispness stepping up from Tidemaster to Avid, and I really enjoy throwing Twitchin’ Mullets on mine. Quote
Super User bulldog1935 Posted February 25, 2023 Super User Posted February 25, 2023 hands down, 13Fishing Omen Green - the ML is my speckled trout rod. It's also the least-expensive rod I take fishing, and their warranty is excellent. If you want to cast into next week, a braid-raced Zillion with Ray's Studio honeycomb SV spool and PE#1.2 25-lb X-braid (Varivas, etc). From opposite sides of this tide pass, 1/8 oz jighead, I had to thumb my spool to keep it out of my friends. Quote

I Looked up the weight of that Zillion SV TW...I was surprised to find it weighs 6.7 ounces. Quote
chall59 Posted February 26, 2023 Author Posted February 26, 2023 Hey guys, thank you for all of the replies. I should have mentioned this in the OP but I am looking for a spinning rod. I actually just bought a tatula elite in 7'3 M/Extra fast. That was going to be my topwater/bigger jerkbait rod. The rod I am currently looking for would throw some of the smaller jerk/twitchbaits like the 17mr. I am going to check out some of these options yall listed. Quote
thunderblack Posted April 21, 2023 Posted April 21, 2023 Hey there, I have the St. Croix Avid M F and my favorite...Shimano Teramar XX SE in 7' M F. You won't be able to put it down. Great jerkbait or all around spinner for SW or fresh. Quote
