PBBrandon Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 I currently have a Tatula SV (2017 model) that feels geary and is loud especially when free spinning. For the first year it was a spectacular reel. Still is, besides the above issues. I went fishing with it yesterday and it seemed to calm down and get smoother/quieter as I fished it for a bit. Then when I got home and the reel dried out, it was noisy again so I tore it down and regreased the gears. Didn’t fix it. Thinking about ordering a new gear set for it. Any ideas on what else it could be? Thank you Quote
JediAmoeba Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 They get like that - especially the 8.1:1 gear ratio ones. You can tighten them up a bit with spacers and lube but it really doesn't hurt the performance. If it hasn't been serviced in a while I would recommend servicing it or sending it to an expert. 1 Quote
newapti5 Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 Did you clean and oil the spool bearings? It sounds like them bearings are dried/damaged. It's not that easy to get water into gears, but it's pretty easy for spool bearings after several cast. When water get into bearings, it'll quiet them down a bit as lubricant, and after bearings get dried, the noise will come back. 2 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 I doubt the gears are bad from your description. The reel is in need of a full tear down deep cleaning and lubrication. If you have questions or want to send it in contact me. 1 Quote
Tatulatard Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 Sounds like bearings. More likely the one that supports the handle shaft and sits in the side plate or even the ar bearing. Is it a scratchy sound when turning the handle? 1 Quote
PBBrandon Posted February 23, 2023 Author Posted February 23, 2023 Dry bearings sounds like it explains it. Especially the noise. I’m sure part of the geary feel can be attributed to the sound making it seem rough. I’ll try getting them good with oil. Last time I cleaned and oiled the bearings I might not have put enough. I was worried mainly about not overlubing them as opposed to not underlubing 3 minutes ago, Tatulatard said: Sounds like bearings. It is certainly a bearing because the reels gets some water on it and quiets down then gets all nasty scratchy once dry again. Quote
newapti5 Posted February 23, 2023 Posted February 23, 2023 I personally put light grease in baitcaster bearings, except the two spool bearings. Grease would slow them down a little, but it'll expel water better and make the reel winding smoother. Quote

Same for me - especially the bearings next to the roller bearing and the one under the drive shaft. These are pressed into the frame and if they have any imperfections their sounds are amplified by the housing. 1 hour ago, Tatulatard said: I have a tat that is doing the exact same thing. I take the retainers off mine and pack them with a bit of grease(not on the spool bearings). Really quiets the reel down and keeps it smooth for ages but you have to be careful that no debris gets in them otherwise they wear out quickly. Quote
ska4fun Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 Only a full clean-up and inspection on the pinion and main gear could point what exactly rests the problem. Tatulas (100 and older) with that bearing under the pinion gear are very susceptible to rusting. Quote
ShyBass Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 Gears don't engage on a free spool so it sounds like a problem with bearings, specifically the spool bearings. Oil the problematic bearings if you can locate which bearings are the problem. If not, you can always send the reel to a tech. But it would be much quicker if you ordered new bearings and installed them yourself if you can diagnose the problem on your own. Quote
