Dobyns Fury 703/733c : What’re They Good For?

I have a shot at picking these up very lightly used for $70 each or $130 both. I have some slightly cheaper Medium casters (Falcon HD and a new MONSTERBASS Lunkerstick Mod-Fast) so I’m not sure these rods would add anything to my arsenal but the deal seems hard to pass up. What do you guys use these Dobyns rods for?

I have both of those.

 

I bought the 703 before I had any idea what a rod could be used for.  right or wrong, I just went fishing.

 

I use them both interchangeable.  weightless senkos mostly or very light tex rig.  In the beginning I took a lot of bass with the 703 on finesse jigs.  sensitivity is fine.  last month I annoyed the heck out of a bunch of Big Stripe bass with a Vision 110.  

 

the Fury 703 or 733 are my most often broken rod.  so there is that.  I have snapped 3.  one was totally my fault when a tungsten jig came back and hit my rod.  the other two, were mysterious snaps at the hookset.

They are more or less the same rod, minus 3" of length. The 733c may have slightly slower action than the 703C, largely due to slightly more tip.

 

My kid has the Sierra 703C and it's a stupid versatile rod -- perhaps the most versatile that we own. It will fish anything from weightless or lightly weighted soft plastics, lightweight finesse jigs (SK bitsy bugs usually), spinnerbaits 3/8oz and under, smaller plastic swimbaits, smaller sized prop baits, jerkbaits, squarebills, poppers, spooks and buzzbaits to name a few.

I have the FR733. I mainly use it for throwing 4' MB Hazedong Shads on a 3/16oz weight swimbait hook. About 10 grams. Same as an unweighted 5" senko. I always run straight 30 lb braid with it. It's actually a good 3/8oz chatterbait rod as long as the trailer isn't too heavy. I got a few fat 5+ fish on it right off the bait, so no durability issues for me.

All the baits mentioned are in play plus under spins AND, both are surprisingly good with crankbaits in the 1/4 to 1/2 ounce range.  My experience with durability has been great.

I also have both. Currently have a squarebill on the 703 and a Fluke on the 733. Very versatile rods and fish like a heavier medium to light medium heavy.

I would buy one for $70.  Throw a slx on it and do some fishing.
