Scheels is coming to town

Tulsa town that is.  I don't know anything about scheels...I assumed it was like Academy.  However, Scheels is going to be one of the anchor stores at Tulsa's largest Mall (Woodland Hills).  Saw on the news this morning that they are demo'ing the old Sears that resided there for the last 40 years.  Sad to see that, but that is another thread in itself.  So, is Scheels a legit fishing tackle store with good selection, or is fishing stuff an afterthought there, like Dick's?

They started up north more, but they have a decent fishing department. The one closest to me is a smaller store, but despite that they have a good selection and some of the higher end tackle. Their newer stores are a lot bigger and they seem to cater more to the specifics of an area, so I certainly believe they'll have a good selection of fishing gear there.

I'm sure you could find some clearance stuff here & there but most of their stuff is full retail price. I've only purchased a couple clearance/sale baits on their website to spend a old gift card I had sitting around.

Scheels pretty much mopped up what was left of Dicks here in Minneapolis…. And they did a good job of it IMO. They have some sales but not like some discount or outlet stores. Their customer service is as good as it gets online or in the store. I like their values and yeah conservative stance on things and try to buy from them as much as I can.

More like a dicks.  I haven't been in one in years and I was more interested in the paintball stuff at the time.  I miss those days.

The one down here in The Colony, TX is really nice. Best rod/reel selection I’ve seen with plenty of high end models. However, they do run pretty low on stock sometimes. Great lure selection as well. Not a lot of deals but it is a good place to get a rod in your hands and if anything, feel it before buying it online for a good deal. It is kind of like a Dicks downstairs and a F&S upstairs if they build the Tulsa one similar

Scheels has much more fishing gear than Dick's. Like @FryDog62 said I like their prices and conservative values so they will always have my business. The one time I had an issue with a product I ordered (wrong size jighead), they told me to just keep it and they refunded me as well. Very good customer service

Scheels is locally based in Fargo, ND and has stores up here in Eden Prairie, St Cloud, Eau Claire, Rochester, Mankato, Fargo, Sioux Falls, and Bismarck.  I have been to all of those locations over the years.  I would call them a glorified Dick's Sporting Goods, but better because they carry more fishing tackle and a lot more hunting stuff, including firearms and ammo.

One major complaint I do have about them up here is their lack of items on a "seasonal" basis.  They completely remove most of their open water fishing tackle from late September through March and put up ice fishing gear.  They've lost me as a customer in the winter months for that reason.  They really should design their stores better, so that they can keep open water fishing tackle out all season.  @KP Duty you will not have that problem in Tulsa.

Scheels is one of my mainstays for local shops. Always good service, good prices and decent selection. The conservative values thing doesn't bother me as they don't try shoving it down people's throats like other places do...and those others I will never give money to.

Scheels actually trains their employees and keeps them for a long time.   Their customer service and knowledge is amazing.   I have bought many guns and archery equipment there.   Their fishing department is solid.   It is just hard with their prices being retail with a few sales.    They recently (about 3 years ago) updated their website to make it usable.   It used to be horrible.
I also like their values and my family buys a lot of clothing and such from them as well as sporting goods.
I think you will like them!!

I think one of the reasons the employees are so dedicated is that Scheels is actually employee owned. Everyone from the lowest cashier on up gets stock shares as part of their benefits...so they all have a 'stake in the game' rather than just being 'paid help'.

Dick's has fishing gear in Tulsa?  I've been to four different Dick's in OKC and haven't seen so much as a bobber.

Let me know how it turns out!  I might have to make it a point to stop by if it's any good.

I grew up with the Scheel kids.  Crazy to see their success.  Out of all big box stores they are by far the best although you can imagine my bias.

@MN Fisher turned me on to Scheels. We don't have any in AR, closest one is in TX. Back during the heights of china's gift to the world, no one had something that I was looking for to install in my boat in stock, don't remember what it was. Scheels had it in stock, competitive pricing and fast shipping. I wish there was one in Little Rock or closer.

I live near 2 scheels...we have one 45 miles north in Sioux Falls and 40 miles south in Sioux City. We also have fleet farm and Dicks...Scheels is better than both of them.

The Dick's in Tulsa did get rid of their tackle. The  Broken Arrow store (suburb of Tulsa) has tackle IIRC, even though Bass Pro is right down the road.  The new Scheels in Tulsa will have only Academy and Walmart to compete with, and will be in the busiest/highest rent location in town.

This is my Scheels store too.

The fishing section is pretty big and they have a pretty good selection but not always a ton of everything. The last time I looked at rods they had Exprides, Adrena's, some Loomis, some St. Croix, a bunch of Levantes, a few different Dobyns Champ, Extremes and Furys...but not always more than 3 or 4 of each line. So they have some cool stuff but it was a bit hit or miss as far as individual rods.

The gun department is amazing if that's your thing. Prices are pretty average but the selection of higher end rifles, handguns, shotguns, and optics equals or bests any gun shop I've ever been to.

Their clothing selection is also stellar, they carry a lot of really high end brands that are usually only found in specialty stores, not general sporting good stores.

It's one of those places you can spend a ton of money on stuff you didn't even realize you needed.

Yeah, I read an article about it after seeing your post here.  It looks like it's going to be pretty big!  I used to live in Sand Springs, so I'm somewhat familiar with the area (it's changed a bit in the last 15 years).  I just haven't had many reasons to make it up that way, plus there are few things on this planet that I hate worse than that mind-grating drive on I-44.  It's somehow both stressful and boring.  I'll often take Rt. 66 or go one up to HWY 51, even though that adds another 45 minutes to a 1.5 hour drive.

We have Scheels, Cabela's and Bass Pro in the Omaha metro area.

Scheels is my go to!

Years ago, it was Cabela's...that was before getting purchased by BP.

I think you are going to really like Scheels.

Note: My daughter works at Scheels...and employees get a wonderful discount...sometimes up to 40-50% off retail!

I've never been in one.  driven past a few on cross country trips, and they look huge.

not sure even a store like that could save my local malls.  California malls are a dying breed.

I've got Scheels, Cabela's, Dick's, and Omnia all within 30 minutes of my house here.  Cabela's has by far the most open water fishing tackle, and its out all year round, unlike Scheels.  Omnia is pretty good too, but its not a full "in store" buying experience like the others.

There is also a lesser known Thorne Brothers Custom Tackle Shop, but it primarily caters to muskie anglers and fly fisherman.

I remember Scheels from when I lived in Fargo. They were a small store with two locations. One in north Fargo and one in south Fargo. Always liked them.

Then moved own to Minneapolis area and went to Fleet Farm, Capras, Thorne Bros, and eventually Gander Mt.

I think you will like Scheels. I still order from them occasionally and my wife ordered my Drotto kit for the boat trailer from them. She said they were very helpful in helping her get the right one for our Stratos.

I have had nothing but great service from ordering from their web site. So much so, that I went out of my way on a return trip from NW Wisconsin to stop at one of their stores.  I was very impressed with the staff's overall knowledge, not only of the department they worked in. The closest one to me is in Springfield, IL, which I plan to visit on my next trip south.

None around me but whenever I'm driving through Reno or Missoula it's almost a mandatory stop. So much better than Dick's Sporting Goods IMO and I even prefer them over BPS and Cabala's.

Without a doubt one of the few remaining large retail stores with EXCELLENT customer service.  I used to go to the one in/near Salt Lake City, UT every year that I would attend the OR Show there.  And I ain't embarrassed to admit I ride the Ferris wheel every time.
