Curious- I have always found a longer rod to be better on the hookset since I pick up more line with it.

At what distance & depth?

For the most part I am talking 15+ feet down with at least a half ounce.

But even with hair jigs in 15 feet or less, I find setting the hook easier with a longer stick.

Pitching distance?

Or casting distance?

Not that it matters, you do what you're comfortable with.

I'm like @WRB I take up "slack", move line with my reel. I can move 31" with a single handle turn.

Crank down while swinging like a wild man...that's what I do. With an 8 foot rod from tip down while reeling you easily bring in more line than you need.
