Just ordered a Max 735. I’ve heard it’s a great frog rod. I have a Dobyns Fury 735 for frogs currently and I love it. It’s also great for flipping grass with 1/2-3/4oz. I almost exclusively have either Powell or Dobyns rods in my arsenal at this point. Looking forward to comparing the Max 735 to my Fury. I’ve found that the Powell rods I have are noticeably lighter than the Dobyns, but the Dobyns tend to balance better. If anyone else has used both, I’d love to hear your thoughts on this topic.

I’m sure they will both get used for both techniques, but I’m predicting that I’ll use the Max more for frogging and the Fury more for that flipping lighter weight in the grass. My DC766FR handles the heavier stuff lol.

The Powell is the better rod. If you were comparing it to a Champion it would be a closer call but the Powell still wins.

Powell will be lighter then the Fury for sure. It looks like Powell is coming out with some more rod models in their Naked Series. I wonder if they are going to revamp the Max models or coming out with another line eventually?

Agreed. This will be my first experience with a Max. I don’t have a Champ 735 yet, but it’s on the list. I’ve been happy and really impressed with all my rods from Powell and Dobyns. The less expensive lines are great bang for your buck and they only get better the more you spend.

Also trying out the Naked Series. I got the Max 735 and the Naked 734. Plan on using braid on the 735 for frogs. Hoping the 734 will be good for jigs/plastics around 1/2oz with 14-16#FC.

I fished a Naked series spinning rod all of last year as a drop shot rod and it's great.

If you ever come across the older max series rod with all black blank grab it.

They still bring about the same money as when they were new, but they are really good.

Keith, the owner is a great guy. Don't hesitate to call him if you have any questions.
