Hello everyone, I cleaned my Daiwa Alphas SV TW and now I am getting an awful screeching sound when pulling drag.

I greased the carbon washer, as well as tried it dry, same results. Reel casts and retrieves fine, no noise or resistance.

Tried 3 times now to solve this by tearing the reel down and putting it back together. It's driving me nuts trying to figure this out. Any ideas?

a screeching drag is like when a fish is making a hard run ... that sounds more fartish

does it free spool fine? It doesnt seem like its a drag issue to me but something else seated incorrectly

nvm you answered that

what happens if you hold line out and retrieve with the drag set very low?

Could your anti-reverse bearing be slipping?

Or maybe your pinion is not seating and engaging your spool?

I agree that it doesn't sound like a drag slipping

If I hold the line and reel against the drag, set low, the handle spins forward silently and the spool stays in place. There is no backwards play in the handle.

I suppose it's possible, but I didn't touch anti reverse bearing.

I can cast and retrieve line no problem. So I would think the pinion is engaging the spool, otherwise the spool wouldn't release for the cast or retrieve line.

If it is barely engaging the pin on the spool it will reel it fine with little to no load, but if you put a heavy load on it, the pinion can jump on the pin.

Hold up on the thumb bar and slowly pull the line to see if you can feel anything in the thumb bar when it slips.

It doesn't really sound lume a grinding pinion though....

I have tried various adjustments and I think it's either the spool or the pinion. It feels like vibration in the spool, never damaged the spool. Thanks for the idea, I will take it apart once again and try resaeting the pinion gear.

My guess.... The ratchet on the bottom of the main gear is not seated properly. There might be a notch on the drive shaft that it fits into.

Also, another guess, the pinion yoke is upside down but this would cause other issues.

Just curious, did you put the part 86 firmly onto the base of main shaft?  The hole in its middle is not a round hole, but rather a square one. It must firmly fit into the base of the main shaft, so that part 86 will ALWAYS rotate with main shaft, not main gear.

When you pull drag, the main gear will rub against drag washer 87, which in turn will rub against part 86, trying to rotate it. If part 86 is loose, it isn't totally locked with part 44 or the main shaft. With a little force from drag washer 87, part 86 could rotate and clash with part 44, making that noise in your video.

This is what I could deduce from that sound in your video, because it doesn't seem like drag rubbing but some parts clapping together.

OK, came home after work took her apart and verified every single part is correctly installed. Put her back together, same thing. It feels like the spool brake drum is chattering against the magnetic brake sideplate. The only thing I did to the side plate or spool was put a drop of oil in the bearings.

I don't get it.

It’s hard to say for certain long distance but that sounds very much like the pinion slipping con the drive pin. It’s 100% not the drag.  Check to see if the yoke is upside down.

That was my thought as well and someone further up mentioned it but would it still cast and retrieve normally if upside down?

While youre at it, check part 51 the pinion yoke post thing as that can be installed in 2 different positions only one of which is correct.

Set up your drag to a proper level, use your thumb to hold down the spool still, then turn the reel handle. If the noise still happens, then it's definitely from the gear side; if the noise stops, then it could be from either side.

Yoke has been confirmed in the correct position, springs in good shape, Pinon itself in good shape. If I hold the spool with my thumb and reel against the drag its silent and smooth. Any chance grease or oil on the pinion gear spool locking part would cause this?

100% locked in place on the square part of the main shaft.

Yeah the odd thing is you mention it casts and retrieves normally which rules tons of things out but leaves me scratching my head ...

Me after 11 teardown ... ?

Where are you located? I'm in lindsay and have a fair bit of experience with servicing if you'd like a second set of eyes on her.

I was just there yesterday for work. Hopefully you can get the issue resolved! Let me know if you need help!

Thank you for the offer, that's what I love about this site, people always happy to help a fellow angler.

I have it in pieces now, I think I am going to remove and clean everything again and reassemble, after I re-exam every little piece. Hoping I don't need a new pinion/main gear, as it's very new still, hopefully I didn't strip one of the spool locking grooves of the pinion.

However, it will have to wait till Wednesday if I want to stay married. Wife's not going to allow trouble shooting a reel on valentines day :)

I tried another round or 5 trying to solve this. I just can't seem to figure out why the pinion gear is not locking in the spool. Everything is out together the same as the schematics, but obviously I am missing something. I have tried to include a few close up pics.

@Delaware Valley Tackle if you see anything out of place or know a short list of reasons the pinion gear won't seat properly, I would be extremely grateful.

I see the springs on the yoke posts but not the pinion yoke itself. Did you remove the yoke and put the springs back on for the pics or are you putting the yoke on top of the springs when you reassemble?

No, the yoke has the silver metal piece showing in the center near the pinion gear. The yoke and pinion gear were put together and slide into the pinion bearing in the frame. Then the springs put on the posts, on top of the yoke.

The yoke is black, as are the surrounding parts so it's hard to make out, but it has a silver piece in the center.
