My family and I are going on a vacation to the Philippines in late September and one of our layovers is in Tokyo, Japan for 20 hours. I figured since I love some JDM reels and tackle (a 7ft.+ rod would probably cost a fortune to add to my luggage plus the chances of it getting broken in the plane and airport would probably be extremely high…lol) I was thinking I’d check out some tackle shops that aren’t too far away from the airport. I would think it would also be significantly cheaper in Japan then here in the U.S., is that the case? Can anyone who’s travelled to Tokyo inform me of where the best bass fishing tackle shops are and is it much cheaper to buy the JDM tackle in Japan? @Glenn do you have any recommendations our know of anyone who would?

A few weeks ago, I googled 'fishing  tackle store tokyo' and it pulled up several with pictures of the inside and outside of the various shops.  Doing that will help you narrow them down by selection/location.

I did that too but there are tons of them and i was hoping someone with experience who’s been there could help me weed through them all ?

I tried to meet up with a friend in Tokyo during a long layover on the way to PI. Security made it impossible. Hopefully, you have better results.

I haven't been to Tokyo since 2015 on my way to the Naval Base in Yokosuka.  If you're landing at Narita.  It's a good distance from downtown Tokyo.  Unless you can read or speak Japanese it would be tough to get where you want to go and find a tackle shop if they let you leave the airport area.  I doubt Security has gotten any easier since then.  As far as bargains go on fishing tackle, it would depend on the exchange rate.  One of the Japanese nationals who worked at our office was a big bass fisherman.  I used to have some interesting discussions with him about it, even brought him a couple of lures to try on whatever local lake he fished.

Pre covid. But my layover was only 7 hours. With a 20 hour layover, they might let you use a hotel. That's a long time for them to expect you to stay in the airport. I would call your airline.

I can never get a long enough layover in Tokyo to pull that off.  Try to get yourself an authentic cork "pop frog" while in the Philippines.

Joshuya and Sansui in the Shibuya district are a couple of my favourites. But it’s at least a good 45 mins from Haneda airport.  You could take public transit there but beware it’s an underground maze but it can get you anywhere. It’s also operated by several subway companies so you may have to take a different line and pay a different fare. Getting around can be an overwhelming, one look at the subway maps and you’ll see. Google translate and Google maps were used heavily the few times I’ve been there. Locals are super helpful and friendly though.

As for prices, it’s really not significantly cheaper as one would think. The selection is amazing though and I always spend hours wandering while my wife and kids rest their feet.
