Swim baits 1/16, 1/8, 3/16 1/4

So after listening to bass talk live this week.  There was a detailed segment on throwing paddle tailed swim baits with Jason Reyes.  He was using  1/16, 1/8, 3/16 1/4 Oz jigs with  Size 1, 1/0, 2/0 etc etc.  hooks with 6 lbs line. He was using a bait caster.  I’ll probably for right now be using a spinning set up.

 

I’ve been wanting to use lighter wire smaller jig heads for a while on paddle tails and the guest and segment clicked with 

 

I’m assuming this mold Model #: GRC-7-would work well for the application.  What are some other molds that every one is using

 ?

I like the Do-it Freestyle Jig for finesse swimbaits. I make them with an Owner 5318 but the Mustad 32746 works as well. The head is actually balanced so you can reel the bait really slow and it will stay level.

I've tried a few of the ballhead jigs with small swimbaits.  I don't like the Gammy ones since the bait keeper ridges tear the plastic more than I'd like.  I prefer the Owner jigs or better yet the Keitech tungsten jigs.  I prefer no keeper or a very small one since I superglue the swimbait to the head.  3/16 oz is the weight I use the most.

I ended up going with the gama do it mold Grc-7-A.  I also picked up some L3053 lazor sharp eagle claw hooks to play around with.  I believe that I have some similar style gama 604 hooks, Mustad, and owner hooks on hand already. 
 

 

also bought a new Lee melter for MFC to get ready for walleye jig making  season.

I've been eyeing this mold myself as an all around jig-head. If its not a problem , see if it will work in a tube .

That’s a good idea actually I wasn’t thinking about that.  The smaller ones might work.  I’ll check it out soon.  
 

I was hoping to do a test run with that mold and new melter tonight

Yeah it seems like it will work for tubes.  The hook eye is buried into the tube.  Hook eye could be longer but, would work.  There up to the 1/4 oz size would work better for 3.5 inch tubes. 
 

1st photo: so the bottom tube is a no-name generic 3.5 tube with 1/8 jig.  Middle tube is a strike king 3.5 tube with 1/4 oz jig.  Top jig is 1/4 with a 4.0 zoom tube. 
 

The 1/4 oz has 2/0 hook the 1/8 has 1/0 hook. 
 

2nd photo the 3/0 eagle claw lazor sharp dosent want to fit.  I don’t know if I need to maybe mill out the hook eye ?

I can’t believe I’ve put off buying this Lee melter for so long.  Definitely blows my hot pot 2 electric ladle out of the water

I noticed the Drimal tool, not a good idea!

Try Gamakatsu #114, lighter wire with forged round bend and very strong hook, universal mold fit to #604.
