Super User ChrisD46 Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 What is your set up for hard jerk baits - why did you choose bait cast or spinning set up for hard jerk baits ? Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 When I throw them I use bc because I like the way it feels and I have more control. 3 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 Both. 1 Quote
Super User Bird Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 Much prefer a baitcaster for Jerkbaits. The use of spinning tackle increases the chance of line tangle with the trebles. 1 Quote
long island basser Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 3/8 and Under spinning-10lb braid /flouro leader. Over 3/8 bc 12 lb sniper. Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 I have a spinning and casting rig each dedicated to jerkbaits. Spinning rig is for the small ones and the casting rig is for all normal sizes and up. I much prefer a casting rig, and am looking into a small casting outfit capable of throwing the tiny jerkbaits. Super User OkobojiEagle Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 I have better line management using a bait casting reel, however, there comes a point at which casting a tiny jerk bait with casting gear becomes too difficult... Every angler has to make this decision for themselves. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 For large jerkbaits I use a BC rig. When I'm fishing a small jerkbait I use spinning gear. 1 Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 I use both but spinning gets the nod 75% of the time. Spinning gear is 7' MLF for small jerkbaits (3/8 oz) 8 lb braid mainline with 8 lb FC leader 6'9" MXF Deep Jerkbaits 10 Braid mainline 10 lb FC Leader 7' MF Standard & Deep Jerkbaits, 10 Braid mainline 10 lb FC Leader 7'4" MF For longer casts with Standard & Deep Jerkbaits, 10 Braid mainline 10 lb FC Leader When I'm looking to keep a jerkbait higher in the water column, I'll use a mono leader. Standard & deep jerkbaits on Casting gear is almost always 7' M Fast 10 lb FC. A-Jay 2 Quote
Kevhead19 Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 I'm a spinning guy for jerkbaits. I like it best as the windiest time of the year are when they shine for me. I fish from a kayak and stand/sit throughout the day. I like that I can get a good response from any angle with the spinning rod with my movement. 1 Quote
Super User Dwight Hottle Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 I use both for baits up & including 1 oz. I have been using a lefty bait caster recently after a lifetime of right handed reels because I prefer to work the bait with my dominate right arm. So much like @A-Jay I give spinning tackle the nod most of the time but the lefty bait caster is growing on me the more I use it. 1 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 My boat sits low in the water (or I sit low to the water lol). I started with baitcasting but came to realize it’s a helluva lot easier to work the bait with a spinning rig. 1 1 Quote

ScottW Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 I’ve used both and I bank fish. Spinning for smaller, lighter lures and bc for larger heavier ones. Both have worked equally well for me. Quote

Super User flyfisher Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 Spinning mostly but i use BC for deep divers. I fish a lot of soft jerkbaits like flukes and use spinning for that so i guess it is what I am used to at this point Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 both. i think a jerkbait really benefits from a longass cast. at least in my waters. they always seem to smash it way the heck out there. but both. i can cast a V110 pretty well with my BC rigs. Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 Another vote for “both.” I’d use up all my daily likes in this one thread agreeing with most everyone above ? 1 Quote
Super User Jrob78 Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 Casting for all jerkbaits 3 Quote

I think you are spot on. Most of my jerkbait catches tend to be on far casts. I don’t get many close to the boat or bank. Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted February 11, 2023 Super User Posted February 11, 2023 Both Spinning - 6'9" ML Fast/ Stradic 2500/ 8lb braid to 6 or 8 lb FC for under 3/8 oz Casting - 7' MH Fast/ Curado MGL 70 with 12 lb FC for 5/8 to 1 oz - 7'2" Med Fast/ Curado MGL 70 with 10 lb FC for 3/8 to 5/8 oz deep JBs - 7' Med Fast/ Curado MGL 70 with 10 lb FC for 3/8 to 5/8 standard JBs - When I want to feel fancy I use two Aldebarans MGL 50s, one on a 7' Med Fast, one on a 6'10" Med Light Fast, both with 10 lb FC for light to standard JBs Quote
Smokinal Posted February 11, 2023 Posted February 11, 2023 Both as well but I like most of mine on spinning due to the increased casting distance. I have a few that are know "good casters" and I'll throw those on a BC. Quote
GregN Posted February 12, 2023 Posted February 12, 2023 Put me in the spinning camp too... I typically throw JBs like LC pointer 78 and 100s on 6ft 6 to 7 ft med power fast action rods w 15# braid and 6' FC leader for smallies. Leader gives me a fighting chance at keeping my lure when i incidently catch a 8 pound Northern and he has engulfed my pointer. Quote
