That woman was looking for a property line fight long before you happened along. You see that all the time around here. It's to keep the cows or whatever from getting loose via the shallow water. Never seen it done with chain link fence, though. Sounds very Karenish to me. 1 Quote

FWIW, my moniker means nothing beyond I'm goofy. Nothing in particular. I created it 25 years ago for a forum I was on/browsing. I fly fished pretty exclusively at the time. That's what I came up with. And ever since I've used it for every forum I've joined in the past 25 years. If anyone ever had to do a background check on my online activities, I'd be pretty easy to put together. 1 Quote
Super User Bankc Posted February 10, 2023 Super User Posted February 10, 2023 I don't know what category this falls into, but I routinely run into guys at the ramp who are extremely rude to their wives/girlfriends. Last fall I had a guy backing his boat in next to me, and he was right friendly with me. One of his kids came over and started talking to me, and the kid was a bit rude, but only in the way that an 8-year-old doesn't understand, so I didn't take any offense. The dad was taking care of all of the last-minute things, like popping in the plug, and then hopped into the boat and told his wife to throw it in reverse, punch it, and then slam on the brakes. Well, she managed to do that, but he started yelling at her that she wasn't doing it right. Another try, and now he's calling her all kinds of names in front of their kids. Another try and he's explaining to her why she's terrible at everything she does. Another try and he yells at her to stop, gets out, and removes the straps from the back of the boat that were preventing him from launching. He didn't say nothing to her about it either. Many years ago, I probably would have said something to him about treating people like that. But I've learned that confrontation in those situations just makes the problem worse, and unless she's asking for help, she'll probably turn on you too. I would have only angered him further and exposed her for her willingness to put up with such nonsense. So I just went on my way and felt really bad about not doing anything. 5 Quote

I've got better things to do than get worked up about someone else's behavior. The last minor incident I had was on the big lake here that is packed with people. I was 20-30 yards off shore in my kayak (spot locked) and casting to the shore for a nice dropoff. I had been there a while, certainly long enough for the guy paddling his kayak around the entire back end of the cove to see what I was doing. No matter, he decided it was important to just paddle through right across where I was fishing. If I didn't care about the lure I was throwing I'd have tossed one across the bow but it was my best DT. I just moved on and chalked one to to 'should have known better' fishing that lake on a saturday. I have been kayak fishing for 20+ years and I have to say that kayak fishermen in general are some of the most inconsiderate people on the water and at the boat ramps. I do think a lot of this has to do with many getting into it for the group aspect and going out with others so they think everyone is like that. Quote
ScottW Posted February 10, 2023 Posted February 10, 2023 Speaking of jet skis and idgits, my father in law used to go up to Smith Lake to fish a lot. He’d put out at Smith Lake Park mostly and start fishing the sloughs and drop offs nearby. The lake is huge and has its fair share of idgits on jet skis or sea doos that could care less about anyone trying to fish. Well, my father in law had a remedy for that if/when it happened to him. Which it did. He had one rod rigged up with a 2oz. sinker on 20# mono that he would sling at the offending idgit if he roared by too close all intentional like. He’d give them one chance and if they did it again the sinker would fly! He got pretty darn accurate with that thing over time and became well known among the local idgits. They tended to give him a wide berth if they saw him. ? Can’t say I blame them. I’d hate to get hit with a 2oz. sinker traveling at velocity! 1 Quote

To the topic, I’ve had a hooligan story that I described here before encountering a poacher. 5’4” me was ready to take on a refrigerator perry size guy who threatened me, and he would have lost. I have another hooligan story from my early 20s, two of them attempting to mug me at 3am as I was walking home from a lab. Come on man, I need a Karen encounter, lol. Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 10, 2023 Super User Posted February 10, 2023 The other day I was fishing a pond that is in the middle of a frisbee golf course. It’s public . I was there first, but had only made a couple casts. Suddenly a group of 10 or so , mostly younger aged frisbiers showed up. God forbid they could just walk the 100 feet around me. They started firing frisbees anyway. One went over my head. Another one went in the water right where I was fishing. For some reason, that really ticked me off. Instead of saying something in anger I just reeled in and left. They probably have no clue they did anything wrong… or maybe they did after I slung a little mud taking off outta there… 2 Quote

Being there first doesn't change that. They were probably equally mad at you for standing next to the course. I'm not saying you were in the wrong either. I'm just saying that it's probably not a well laid out park if the two activities are supposed to take place on the same grounds. 1 Quote
Super User N Florida Mike Posted February 10, 2023 Super User Posted February 10, 2023 I’m not questioning their right to be there, if they had been there first I would have gone somewhere else or waited until they moved on. I just don't get how they can see that you’re obviously fishing and start throwing frisbees anyway . Some of those things can knock people out. Judging by how bad they were throwing, the extra 100 feet they would have gained by walking around me would have helped them considerably… 1 Quote

Nah he is on the bank fishing, they do not have the right to throw and go near him. If they aren't able to throw with enough controil to not infringe on his space then they need to skip the hole. There is a disc golf course near me that is shared with a public park. If there are people picknicking or whatever you skip the hole unless you are sure they are not in the firing line so to speak. 3 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted February 10, 2023 Super User Posted February 10, 2023 I fished a local pond smack dab in the midst of a frisbee golf course. One of the frisbees hit sideways and rolled down the bank opposite where I was fishing. The “golfer” walked close to where his disc went down the bank and he asked me if I had seen it. I told him it was about 5’ below him. I also told him (truthfully) that a coral snake had just swam across the pond five minutes ago and was likely still there. Those discs must be pricey as he didn’t hesitate to slide down the bank and retrieve it! 3 Quote

The worst karen would be the one that kicked my jon boat when I was 17 or so. She had a chain link fence that went 4 feet or so out into the water on her property line. I had tied up to it not hurting anything. I was catching bream off a big bed that was out from her neighbors. She came out and very rudely told me to leave, because I was “hurting her fence”. I wasn’t. Because of her attitude, I didn't leave . She threatened me with her husband and the police. I was polite, but just kept fishing. Finally, she rolled up her pants leg, stepped into the water, hauled off and kicked my boat. That made me mad so I splashed her with an oar and she retreated. Then I left before she went and got a gun. Not saying I was right by not leaving at first , but I probably would have if she just would have been nice about it to start with… That was me at 17. Not saying I would do that now…? Mine was in Sister Bay Wisconsin. It was spring 25 years ago or so, maybe 7-8am. I was perch fishing with my son in the marina. He and I were maybe 50 yards away from a sailboat when the boat owner emerged and decided he needed to come over and talk to us. Said I was fishing in his backyard and how would I like it if he was fishing in my backyard. I apologized if we may have been too loud...I get it.... He went to the harbormaster and we got thrown out. To this day, and I'm sure this guy has been dead 20 years. I refer to him as the "Guy who owns Lake Michigan" 1 4 Quote

I saw a similar situation last Summer. This guy was going to load his boat. He was standing on the dock holding the rope. His wife/girlfriend was trying to back the trailer down the ramp, but was having trouble. He was yelling all kids of bad stuff and bad language toward her. Mrs. B was with me. I tied my boat to the other side of the dock, then Mrs B and myself walked up to the drivers door. I coached her through backing the trailer down the ramp. She was proud of herself after she got the trailer in the water. "Ken" never said another word. I wouldn't have done that had Mrs B not been with me. Way to many problems can come from helping a woman who has a man with her. 2 1 Quote
