One day years ago I was spring pike fishing with my cousin. Snagged a jerkbait on the side of a dock crib, so I eased up to it and was standing on the very tip of the bow, leaning over to pluck it off with my rod tip, when my cousin accidentally brushed the foot pedal of the motor with his foot while turning. Of course, the speed was set at 100% and the motor just happened to be turned 90 deg, so in the blink of an eye I was suddenly leaning over the water with no more boat under my feet!

Luckily it was only about 4’ deep and pretty much the end of the day, and only a short ride to the ramp. While I was standing in the lake, I took the time to easily retrieve the jerkbait, then say a couple choice words to my cousin ?

No crazy stories about retrieving a lure, I usually don’t care. That being said, I have gone after my boat! My son was maybe 5 or 6, he wanted to hold the rope while I backed the boat into a secluded lake. He wasn’t paying attention to the rope (neither was I to be fair) and I ran it over snapping the rope! I didn’t know it until I launched the boat and watched it float away! We were the only ones there and no houses on the lake so I stripped down to my undies, waded through knee deep muck for 50-60’, then swam another 50-100’ to get the boat. Thankfully it was a warm morning with a warm breeze so after about an hour of fishing in my undies, I was dry.

Mine is a tale about an expensive attempt to retrieve a 1/2oz. jig/trailer.

Someone had lost, what I assume was, and anchor with the rope still attached. I hooked into the rope and after a couple of attempts at retrieval, I decided to cut the line (braid) and continue. To keep the lost line to a minimum, I positioned the boat directly above the snag. Holding the line as I went to cut it, a gust of wind pushed the boat away pinning my custom jig rod between the TM shaft and the bow. Before I could grab it and free spool, the rod snapped. :crying-baby-2:I actually cried as I had painstakingly built that rod over the winter. I couldn't replace it as that blank was discontinued in the spring. Ended up loosing both the jig and a fantastic rod.

I'm not laughing at your gashed hand, I am laughing because your story describes each and every one of us when we were younger! We've all busted our butts at one time or another over a 2.00 lure! Although you say this happened this past summer....that means you're either young, or still young at heart!

Yes sir, you would be correct. I'm only 20. Honestly, I'm surprised that's the best retrieval story I have. My friend and I fished 73 days out of our 90 day summer break so you'd think I would have a better one.

There's a visual I could have gone without this morning. :)

Jacob since you are only twenty, I'm sure there will be many more for you to share. I look forward to them! Your story about shimmying up the tree made me laugh so hard because way, way, back in the day, my good friend "Big John", climbed a tree, walked out on a limb holding other limbs for balance while holding a beer, went too far, (he was 250 lbs.), branch snapped, and went crashing down into the lake. He went under, beer did not!

I was bouncing around a texas rig in the middle of a stick pile, got hung up.

This was when I was younger and my first time spooling up with 20 lb. test (mono). In my 13-year-old mind, that 20 lb. line should never break. I pulled as hard as I could, straight to me (dumb ass). The line snapped with a crack of a rifle and the bullet weight, well it turned into a bullet. It hit me in chest (no shirt), left a nice welp. I went to the ground and groaned for a minute. I quess it could have been worse, like in the eye.

I'll climb trees and take my shoes and socks off to wade in.  If I can still see it, I will get it, somehow.  If I can't see it or get to it, then I'll usually break it off.  My wife will tell you it's because I'm cheap.  But I think it's more because I just don't like being taunted.
