Super User casts_by_fly Posted February 6, 2023 Super User Posted February 6, 2023 Hi gents, thought I might give some humor and also stimulate discussion on this one. I love my kayak, but given the option I would have a tricked out decked aluminum instead that matches the waters here. I have considered a boat a couple times. We have a 94” wide garage and only 19’10” long. That’s a major limiter of what can fit in the garage. My wife is an adamant no about storing a boat outside. Realistically a 16’ decked aluminum with an electric 9.9 is what I need. Given no other constraints I would do that. That said, I don’t think my wife wants me to get a boat. She didn’t when I got the kayak. However, she imparted a condition of ‘if it has a bathroom it’s okay’. Not because she goes fishing with me and needs it but because boats that have a true head are in the size range that she’d enjoy spending a day on cruising. So here’s your challenge. If you were going to build a 16’ aluminum boat with an enclosed bathroom, how would you do it? My initial thought was to use the space between the driver and passenger seats and build in a jump seat bathroom. Of course you couldn’t use it without a screen/cover/tent so I was thinking a pop up camping shower that’s mounted into the floor somehow. Any other creative options? thanks rick 1 Quote

Super User Way2slow Posted February 6, 2023 Super User Posted February 6, 2023 I have always kept a pee cup and a roll of TP stored in a ziplock bag in my boats. Never cared for hanging it over the side and advertising to the world what I was doing. Plus, you don't have to worry about old farts with bad prostates peeing in the side of your boat. On my pontoon, I have a 30x36 changing room that hangs from the Bimini top and keep a 5-gallon bucket with plastic bags and a toilet seat stored on it. My wife keeps suggesting that's getting upgraded to one of the portable potties, even though she has never used it. I prefer the bucket because you don't have to mess with changing and cleaning that chemical crap as with the portable potty. You just fold the bag over and put another one in on top of that one, leaving the first one around the top so you just grab it and take everything out and dispose of it. 3 1 Quote

Most trailers come with them nowadays, but it varies on how much space they save. Mine saves about 16 inches. I would use the rest room before you go fishing, and don't stay out all day. My Mother fishes long days in walleye tournaments multiple times/year, and she uses that portable plastic jug thing that @Captain Phil posted. Quote

Susky River Rat Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 https://store.justencase.com/goodtogo-2.aspx I had thought about getting one of these for my wife. She’s fairly boat trained and waits to go back to the ramp lol Quote

Super User TOXIC Posted February 6, 2023 Super User Posted February 6, 2023 Google is your friend. There are multiple options available from sit on buckets to portable toilets with pull up tents. If she was smart, she would have made the requirement sleeping quarters!?? Quote
Super User Way2slow Posted February 6, 2023 Super User Posted February 6, 2023 Capt Phil, I am one of those old farts that's why I said that. I'm about due for my third roto rooter on the prostate. My brother just had a new style laser surgery done that's supposed to be one and done I'm going to check into. It's not your standard laser deal, something new and only two places in GA that do it. 1 Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted February 6, 2023 Author Super User Posted February 6, 2023 Thanks all for the suggestions so far. The issue isn't that she's on the boat and needs to go. If that were the case, a She-wee and bottle would be my solution for her. The issue is that the only boats she's interested in me owning are ones that are big enough to have a bathroom. Toxic hits the nail on the 'head': 53 minutes ago, TOXIC said: Google is your friend. There are multiple options available from sit on buckets to portable toilets with pull up tents. If she was smart, she would have made the requirement sleeping quarters!?? That was the implication on saying bathroom. Basically a boat with a head will probably have a bed too. At that point, you're pretty locked in to a style and that style isn't an aluminum fishing boat. BUT, she said bathroom so I'm eventually going to figure out something clever. At the last stadium concert/tailgating we did one of the people brought a tiny bathroom tent, maybe 4' tall, in case the portapotties were awful or a long walk away. This might be my lead candidate so far. 3 hours ago, Catt said: The thought of a pontoon boat has crossed my mind. I can't fit a full size one, but the mini pontoons would be interesting. 2 hours ago, Bird said: Trailers with foldable tounges will save a couple of feet on length. depends on the trailer a bit. Lots of newer boats/trailers have been moving the boat forward on the trailer and shortening the tongue. Then putting the pivot right under the nose of the boat. As gimruis noted, you get about 18" back that way. On an older trailer with a long tongue you can put your own pivot in and save a little more. At the end of the day though, 16' of boat plus 2' of motor is about the limit on my garage if I want to be able to slide past the front of it. Also, a 16' boat normally will have a trailer width less than 8'. When you start hitting 17 or 18' boats the trailers get wide. A tracker TXW 175 would just squeeze into the width and be a touch long (might fit if its turned diagonal). I really wanted a TV18 and was ready to get wheel sliders to turn it diagonal across two bays, but the wheels are right on 96" wide. Quote
Functional Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 get a cruiser and make sure it has a "dingy" mounted on the back as the boats "tender" No joke, thats how my father got around a similar issue. Mom bought into it and he got to detach from the mother boat and fish parts of the hudson while she and my sister relaxed. Took a lot of cool overnight trips as kids and got to fish some spots i'm not sure we would have if it was just a fishing boat. Nice part is the dingy can be trailered to other locations. Quote

airshot Posted February 6, 2023 Posted February 6, 2023 Build a polebarn then you can get whatever size boat she wants!! That is what I did, but wife never used the porta potty, so went back to the portable jug in our downsized boat. Quote

We were fishing the Contender vs Regulator tournament a while back, and a pristine pastel blue colored 27 Contender pulls up next to us at the dock outfitted to the max with these kids in their 20s or so, and of course we start talking smack. We start goofing on the color, and after getting all worked up he exclaims "my mother had it custom painted to match her boat". Turns out the joke was on us, cause this was their tender, luckily, I turned on the charm when I met his parents, and offered to walk their golden retriever, so by evening, we were watching movies on the large screen in the main salon of that yacht with his parents. They got us a lot of contacts to run boats too. Win/win, and it was nice to know the kid won't miss his entry fee.... 1 Quote

When i meant dingy i meant like 9' row boat with a 5hp motor and electric on it ?. Never felt poorer than when i worked a boat yard and had to do service on boats that were larger than my first apartment. Quote
Super User WRB Posted February 6, 2023 Super User Posted February 6, 2023 The 19’10” garage depth isn’t an issue as most 17’ 6” boats with motor and folding tongue trailer O/A length is 19’6”. The issue is the door opening width of 94” or 7’10”. Most trailers are 96” wide hub to hub. A small wheel-tire trailer solves the width problem as they are under 7’ hub to hub. USS relief (floating toilet) are available at most public lakes. Several stand up pee devices are available for women. Tom Quote

FWIW my 16'8"(that I call 17 foot) Tracker's storage length is 20'1" with the outboard trimmed down, and the tongue folded per Trackers web site. It isn't any, or much wider than my truck. It would fit width wise, but it's too long. 1 Quote
