papajoe222 Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 I love fishing a frog, but I feel I may be missing some fish once it gets to open water. This has likely been asked before, but is a loop knot used when you want to walk a frog? For a few seasons, I've been attempting to walk a frog, once it clears the vegetation, back to the boat. Is it all in what knot, or frog is used, or am I missing something? 2 Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted January 31, 2023 Global Moderator Posted January 31, 2023 No loop knot , it’s more about the frog and technique I feel 4 Quote
Super User Jar11591 Posted January 31, 2023 Super User Posted January 31, 2023 I still use a palomar knot, but walking a frog requires a much more subtle twitch of the rod for me. Almost as if you're just trying to shake the line without moving the bait at all. 4 Quote

NJBasstard Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 Tie the same knot you always do and go practice with a popping frog in open water. All your doing is making small twitches on slack line. It takes a little practice before you get the rhythm down. 1 Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted February 1, 2023 Super User Posted February 1, 2023 It will be easiest to learn with a pointy nose frog that doesn’t sit too deep like a spro bronzeye. It’s also not going to walk quite like a spook or other streamline hard bait. There’s a lot less glide to it so you have to go light on the twitches. Other than that it’s practice. 1 Quote

I'm not amazing at it, but for me it's a much (much) softer rod twitch than walking something like a spook, it doesn't take much to get that frog to spin around. I also prefer a deeper keel on the frog, but I'm not sure if that's just in my head. Something like the Bully Wa II walks easier than a Pad Crasher for me. 1 Quote
PressuredFishing Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 I had the same issues, some frogs don't like to walk, I'm no pro and tried the loop knot but it seemed to catch grass more than normal knots.. ended up just being because it was just a bad quality frog Quote
papajoe222 Posted February 1, 2023 Author Posted February 1, 2023 Well, I see what my biggest problem is; I was attempting to walk it like a Spook. I've been using walking topwaters for decades and just assumed you'd work the frog the same. Thanks all. BTW Tom, I did check out that video. ? 1 Quote

Super User WIGuide Posted February 1, 2023 Super User Posted February 1, 2023 Using a regular knot is fine, but as stated already, it's very light twitches. Basically twitching is just enough to tighten up slack and then immediately reverse the rod tip and give the line slack. If you don't, it won't allow the frog to continue to turn so it will basically pull the bait back straight and it won't walk. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted February 2, 2023 Super User Posted February 2, 2023 Some frogs definitely walk better then others. To me walking a frog is almost like walking a Pop-R. Little twitches. And then open water comes well for me a different frog normally then a matt frog. Want something a little lighter and longer. For instance wouldn't use a Spro Bronze eye shad to fish matts, but sparse cover definitely. Walks good just not a great matt bait. Only one I use for both are old Snagproof Ish frogs that aren't made anymore. Yeah you can buy the new Phatt frog but not the same as the old. 1 Quote

Super User scaleface Posted February 2, 2023 Super User Posted February 2, 2023 I also feel inadequate at walking a frog . Sometimes I get it but most of the time not . Quote
Jaderose Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 I normally throw frogs into HEAVY slop where walking the frog is a pointless exercise. Occasionally I will come onto a stretch of lily pads or grass or something that isn't ideal for a frog but also isn't ideal for a spook or other treble-hooked baits. In that case, I will throw a frog (usually a Pad Crasher) that I have cut the legs OFF of. Now you have a spastic morsel that will raise a ruckus and is pretty easy to walk. Pad Crashers are cheap and behave great like this. Try it! 3 1 Quote
Jonas Staggs Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 You can use a snap in place of a loop knot if your bait is big enough to support the weight. I have had good luck walking 1/4 oz poppers that way. But I usually tie direct because I fish micro top waters like micro frog, teeny pop r, cricket hopper, etc. Quote
SC53 Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 As Aaron said. Softer twitches than with a spook. And a good amount of slack line. Quote
Super User Bankc Posted February 7, 2023 Super User Posted February 7, 2023 And as suggested, try changing the frog out. I keep finding frogs, so I haven't bought one in years and I don't entirely know what brands I have. But I do know that some of them walk pretty easily, and others almost can't be walked. I have one that seems to want to hop out of the water more than anything. It sits in the water with the nose pointed almost straight up and the underbelly is shaped like a boat. Quote
Super User gulfcaptain Posted February 8, 2023 Super User Posted February 8, 2023 Hands down best walking frogs I've found. 1. Deps Slither K 2. Spro Bronzeye Shad 3. Snagproof Phat Frog Have some others I use but those 3 get it done and rate in that order, no skirt trimming needed. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted February 8, 2023 Global Moderator Posted February 8, 2023 Knot doesn’t matter, it’s all in your presentation as was said. If you twitch the right amount considering the weight of the frog you’re using on a slack line, you can get any frog to walk in place. Just takes a little practice as each time you change something your technique may need to be tweaked just a little. But the premise always remains the same. Mike Quote
Lead Head Posted February 9, 2023 Posted February 9, 2023 For me, it's all about having that perfect amount of slack in the line. Quote

By far the easiest frog to walk for me personally. Keeps me from actually developing good frog walking skills with other frogs. Hard to use anything else in it's category/size. Quote
Super User Darth-Baiter Posted February 10, 2023 Super User Posted February 10, 2023 i heard simply flexing the pinkie finger will move the rod enough to walk a frog. i dont know what i do, while i am sitting at my desk. i just kinda do it. Quote
