I'm looking to start using deep cranks a lot more. I would like a rod that is around $100. I'm going to be throwing DT8-DT14 on this rod.

Everyone will have their opinion to opine about the best deep crankbait rod on the market.

Personally, I like my old All Star Heavy but they are out of production, replaced by All Star Lite.

You can go to your favorite tackle shop and get a feel of the heavy rods for deep cranking, even try the ones that you are not interested in purcasing. Bring the reel you will be using and put it on the rods to see how they feel and are balanced.

I like to touch and feel the rods that I purchase unless I am going to go with a G. Loomis as I know the brand and quality so I can order it on the Internet without any problems.

There are a lot of deep cranking rods for sale on ebay in your price range. Just make sure you read the rod's paramaters regarding line test and bait weight to make sure the rods you like have the power to handle deep strikes and fighting the fish.

Good luck and let us know what you decide to purchase.

Before you go searching for rods designed for deep cranking, just know that that size of a DT isn't a 'deep' crankbait when it comes to the rods.  Big cranking rods are for the 20' class crankbaits.  Most any standard crankbait rod is going to be good for that size and that will open a lot of options for you.  It will also mean for more manageable rods and not dealing with 7'6"+ lengths.  I'm not a glass fan so can't recco a specific one.  If you decide graphite, I fish DT's from 4-20 all the time and have opinions.

@casts_by_fly yeah I know that 8-14 ft isn't very deep. But here in Iowa 99% of the brushpiles and rock piles are in 8-14ft of water. In most of our lakes it doesn't get super deep.

@Choporoz The parabolic bend makes it have a better hook up ratio with treble hooked baits.

@casts_by_fly I'm mostly looking for a 7' 4" MH glass rod. I just don't know which brand to get.

I've read same stuff.  I mean, why do you want glass?  There are lots of graphite and composite rods that will give you similar 'bend characteristics'.  I'm sure there are fantastic fiberglass rods out there - IIRC, @A-Jayuses them.  I just want you to be aware that it is perfectly OK to use graphite rods for crankbaits.

The Dobyns CB non glass rods are outstanding,  take a look at the Fury 705cb, you probably can get it 20% off next time major sales are running. I have a few Champion CBs non glass for cranking and love them.

@Choporoz sounds good man. I've just heard that glass rods are the best for cranking. I would be willing to try out other though.

I'm in the Choporoz camp.  In bass fishing rods, graphite is a better material than glass for so many reasons.  Glass offers durability in abuse situations (not bass fishing), but is heavier and less responsive than an equivalent graphite rod.  If you want a moderate action (or even slow) there are plenty of graphite rods that will do it.  You'll end up with a lighter rod that casts better and easier.  My point about that range not being deep was mostly to help guide your choices.  When people people say I need a big rod for deep cranking, that implies something like a Falcon XD Cranker which is 7'9" Heavy Moderate and rated for 1/2-2 oz baits.  That's a really big rod designed to throw 20-25' deep cranking baits.  If you tried to throw a DT8 on it you'd be very disappointed.  You'd even struggle a bit with a DT14 at 3/4 oz.  My own choice for that set of crankbaits is the Falcon expert Hudson special.  Its 7'3", 3/8-3/4, MH/MF.  Great rod for mid range cranking and also lipless cranks.  A bit over your budget though at $200.  In the bucoo lineup its called the deep runner and comes in at $100 but I've not felt that rod so I can't personally recommend it.  I have other bucoos (the 7' trapcaster is my lighter crankbait rod) and would have no problem getting the deep runner for myself if I needed another one.

At that price point - I highly recommend these ~

I agree i bought a couple of glass crankers but bought a couple of fury 705cb rods. casting is just so much better on the dobyns rods plus the parabolic bend is just as good.

Forgive me if it is in the video; I can't watch it right now... but do you have a preferred model for midsize cranks?

At some point here I'll be looking for a starter cranking rod

There was a time when a true glass rod was desirable. An example was the Lamiglas SR705R.  It was hard to build a rod that had the characteristics of glass in an all graphite rod. Not anymore.  There are numerous rod companies that have achieved the slower, more moderate actions with that “forgiveness” that glass advocates tout. With that, your price point has limited a decent all glass rod as an option.  Composites will get you close and a graphite CB model will hit your budget.  I would take a serious look at the Dobyns Maverick 705CB.  For those who have a Fury 705CB, the Maverick fishes the same at 99.99.  Something to consider.

I assume these are probably similar to the KVD Cranking rods that Quantum use to make, and if so, they were great rods. Still have a 7' MH/M that gets a lot of use.

I think it's basically the same blank with different branding.

I like mine a lot as well.

But you knew that.

The Ark Rods,  Tharp Series, B-Hittay is outstanding for what you're looking to throw IMO. $129 unless you find it on sale, but it's a quality blank with Fuji K series guides, and a comfy reel seat.

Under $100 you go wrong with David Fritz Lew’s 7’ MH Crankbait rod $90.

@T-Billy I have 3 Arks and I'm a huge fan of them. I'm still not sure which rod I'll go with but I will take the Ark into consideration!

10-4. I bought a couple B-Hit's for chatterbaits, but I find them a bit underpowered for that. I like 'em very much for crankin though. Same with the 7' "Grinder".

If ya get to looking for a chatterbait rod, look no further than the 7-4 Heavy, Mod Fast, Invoker.
