I've read through the threads about this, but I still wanted to get some feedback - Are there any really good deals on a new batteries my "big" boat. It's not really big - it's a '03 Lowe 170W with an Evinrude 90.

So? I'm really more interest in the battery for the motor.

Johnson Controls make the bulk of the batteries sold in the USA. If you look at Walmart, Sears Diehard and Autozone's brand they are all the exact same battery Go get a walmart battery with a 3 years free replacement warranty and save some money while your at it. Had my Wally world (Everstart MAXX) battery for 6 years and it is still going strong and was about $20 cheaper than Autozone.

Randy what you need to consider is the stuff you are running off your battery.  You need a good CCA so you can run your electronics, pumps, and accessories and still leave enough to start your engine late on a cold day.

I am running an 875 CCA (white marine crank) from O'Reilly Auto Parts.  I power a 225 Optimax (needs lots of juice to start as it cranks over about 4 times before firing), 2 Low hds units with 2 lss 1 components and it keeps me going.  I will have to wait and see how it does when I run the aerator for a long time.

Yeah - I don't run too much stuff, but I still want to have the reserve capacity to start on cold days like you're talking about. I've been pricing some batteries locally and hopefully getting ideas I didn't think of for the best deal.

Randy don't be looking at reserve capacity.  That is for deep cycles.  You want to look at Cold Cranking Amps (CCA).

IMO batteries are not the items to look for a good deal.  Pay what you have to and get the best you can afford so you won't be paddling home some dark stormy night way up James trying to make it back to Aunt's Creek. ;)

I know about CCA - I don't know why I used the term "reserve capacity". Just typing something else and my mind found the wrong term. I'm not really looking for a "deal" - but I don't want to spend 170.00$ if I can get a good warranty and spend 100.00$ instead. Times are tight, senor. :-/

Oh - it wouldn't be paddling from upper James to Aunt's, it would be Dam area to Mill Creek. Worse.

Much worse! :o

Yes that would be worse.  Wally world has some for around $80.  The one I got at O'Reilly's was $84.  I am not sure what the 3 year warranty one at Wally sells for but it is worth checking out.

Walmart MAXX-65N (S). 850Cca 1000 amp 3 year free replacement about $100.00. Same battery as the Autozone Duralast gold 65DLG $120.00.

It spins my 1968 Ford tractor very strong and the old charging system on the tractor does not throw much juice back to it. I can start my tractor 10 -20 times in a day, including the first start of the season, which usually takes 10-15 seconds of cranking with spraying either. I have one in my boat as well and it never has even acted like it was slowing down. Plus Walmart does not ask many questions if you need to return it.

That is one nice thing about buying something from a big company - it's easy to return/get a refund.

To be honest: Advance Auto Parts.

Me and my father were going to get a new Marine battery for our 18 ft Four Winds, after asked the kid behind the counter to grab the cheapest marine they had and walked back with an Optima Blue-top...we were perplexed.

Turns out that Advanced policy on batteries is that as soon as its connected to the vehicle...its considered used. So the gentleman who bought this realized the boat he was buying already came with a battery he returned it. But it was marked used. We got it for $80 :-O Insane deal.
