I mentioned last week that the local shop was having a few pro fisherman in this weekend and that they were also having a swap meet on Friday. I had been to many classic car swap meets looking for parts for our old cars, but never a fishing swap meet, so thought I'd run up there.

Other than a couple guys having a nice variety of old lures in good condituon, there wasn't a lot that caught my eye, but I did come across a pair of clean Calcutta 151's. I like my lefty reels and had never had any Calcuttas, though I remember wanting them back in the day.

He had them marked at $70 a piece, but said he'd take $120 if someone wanted both. I looked them over and they looked like they had barely been used so I bought both.

Brought them home and opened them up last night to check them out. They were as clean on the inside as they were on the outside, so I strung one up with 10lb Big Game and put it on a Dobyns Fury 705cb I had sitting there.

Wow! Cast nice and reels smooth as butter! Thought I might have to replace bearings since I assume thw had the two old original bearings and a bushing on the spool, but don't think I need too.

Having never had any of these reels,... I'm wondering what people's thoughts are on them. I think these are old originals based on the straight handles and plastic handle nut covers.

Awesome reels!

I like this era of Shimano reels the best, before they were a bit archaic, after they are a bit fussy.   The early 2000s was the sweet spot for Shimano imho.   Obviously others won't agree, but I think they started building their baitcasters a bit to complicated afterwards with DC and various other things.

Congrats on your find.  One of the area boat dealers sponsors on in the winter.  It is a pretty big deal.

It was a pretty big deal here too. Never known them to put something like this on. They put on a 3 day event with Swindle, Ehler, and Scott Martin as speakers, nice sales on all reels (15% off), and good discounts on Daiwa Tat Elite (35% off), All Lews (30% off), and Loomis (15% off) rods.

Strange thing is,... I've been noticing quite a few fishing expos in the area this year for some reason.

That's a good deal. I have two old 251's, one purchased new and the other was used. Never had an issue with them.

@FrnkNsteen

Just curious, where was this at? I live in Indiana didn't hear anything on it.

Thanks,... I really like them so far.

It was at Honey Creek Tackle in Bargersville, IN. If you don't know where that is. It's a suburb on the SE corner of Indiana by Greenwood.

I know of it. I have never been there though. I will have to check it out.

Nice shop. I wouldn't say they offer a lot of great deals,... but the people are good and I like supporting the smaller shops.

Good supply of Daiwa and Shimano reels, Loomis rods, and a variety of other things.
