I'm about to graduate to a little better spinning combo's than I have used in the past. I have heard that Pflueger makes a good reel but no so much on the rod. I'd like to stay around the 100.00 to 150.00 range because I loose a couple overboard each year seems like.

Any suggestions or personal favorites?

thanksĀ

Daiwa Revros reel and Aird X rod gets your out the door a little over $100. I have that combo X2 and it fishes well above it's price range. I use to be a huge fan of the Pfluegar reels but they've really gone downhill the last few years since they got bought out IMO.Ā

While much of my own gear comes in at a bit higher of a price point,

My wife's been fishing a couple of these rods & reels a handful of times a summer for

SEVERAL Years.

They've held up well.Ā

Thanks........but does that mean you do not let your wife use the higher price point gear? What happens if she reaches for the wrong one?Ā  Timeout??

Ā  Ā  Ā But in all seriousness, thank you for the suggestions. Between these ideas and the ones I got from Bluebasser86, I can't go wrong! My Mitchells have been good for many years but now the handles are loose and I'm constantly thinking I need to tighten them.

Do you like the 2000 or the 2500 reel size with the 7' ML? I finesse fish with light line and light lures in current.

Thanks

As long as you're not needed long cast and fishing braid, the 2000 is fine. If you're wanting a little longer cast, or using mono/flouro mainline, you might want the 2500. I have both sizes, the 2000 is a very small spool that doesn't hold much line at all but the reel itself is plenty for bass. My son mainly uses the 2000 so I don't have to worry about him wrecking too much line all at once when he reels over a wind knotĀ ?

Thatā€™s a hard combo to beat at that price. I really like my Revros reels (LT2000 & LT2500). Both my Aird-Xā€™s are casting rods but Iā€™m sure their spinning rods are just as good. Both of my reels are spooled with 20 lb. Sufix 832 and 6 lb. mono leaders.Ā

The Revros is a very nice spinning reel for the $59.99 price point. The biggest knock I can come up with for such a reel is the weight. They are one of the few reels in the USDM that don't have the "D" (deep) spools, which is a definite plus in my opinion. They make an "XH" version of the 2500 that retrieves more line per turn of the crank than the 3000 or 4000 version.Ā

Ā

With that said, the Regal is only $10 more, is an ounce lighter and has over twice as many ball bearings as the Revros does. It does have the "D" (deep spool), but it might still offer better bang for the buck.

Ā

For $54.99 the Aird-X punches well above it's weight and they fish well that I haven't disliked using the ones I have tried. If you prefer cork handles, the Procyon goes for $79.99. So, the Aird-X/Revros combo goes for $114.98 and the Procyon/Regal pairing bumps up to $149.98, or mix and match to suit.Ā

I have a 6ā€™ 6ā€ M/XF Procyon paired with a Shimano Sienna 2500 spooled with 20 lb. Seguar Smackdown. Itā€™s a nice rod. The Sienna is ok but I prefer the Revros.Ā
Ā

Iā€™ve never had an issue with the weight. But everyoneā€™s different. And my LT2500 is the XH. Like I said, nice reel for the $$.Ā

I already broke it sadly, but I bought a Shimano SLX 7 M Fast "do it all" rod from Academy in August on clearance for $50 normally $100.Ā  Ā  The rod was a true gem at full price and then some.Ā  Ā

Ā

They have the new updated ones out now for $100 IIrc., and would imagine they are as good if not better then the version I bought.

Ā

Take a look at those, you might be able to catch a sale on one and then get it sub $100 as well.Ā  Ā

They are. I have two of that exact model myself.

Iā€™ve got a few good ones. Pflueger Trion (30) paired to a LewsĀ Laser SG1 7ā€™ M, Shimano Nexave in both 2500 and 3000 paired to the same rods as the Pflueger except the 3000 is on a 7ā€™ MH. I also have a ShimanoĀ Sahara FJĀ SHC3000HGFJ I got from Digitaka that is currently $72.50 US paired to a Lews 7ā€™ MH. Guess you can tell Iā€™m fond of Shimano reels and Lews rods. ? So roughly $60 for a rod and around $50 for a reel (Shimano Nexave 2500 or 3000) or (Pflueger Trion SP) or the Sahara for a litter more.

Diawa legalis. Ā Very good reel in the $50-$60. Ā It actually replaced a phluegar president. Ā I will never by a phluegar again. Ā I had 3 phuelgars at one time. Ā 1 had one supreme bait caster and 2 presidents. Ā Smoke the one president and the one president with 2 months of each other.Ā
Ā

As far as the rod there are a bunch of good choicesĀ

My grandson has a Lew's G Spin. 8 bearings, thick bail wire, and very smooth. Good reel for around 40 bucks. His is mounted on a Fenwick Eagle rod. He's been using this combo for two years now with no problems.

Another vote for the Daiwa Revros reel in whatever size you prefer, as well as the Daiwa Ā Aird-X spinning rods. 7' ML or M you can't go wrong.Ā

Greetings!

OK, since the thread topic is "inexpensive" spinning combos I'll share my recent experience, experiment. I was at Wal Mart and I happened across an interesting $10 Ozark Trail spinning combo. Initially I was only looking to use the split handled two piece 5.5 foot fishing rod. The reel is functional and is spooled with what I believe is six pound mono. The spool appears to be polymer and the drag is somewhat smooth. There are no clicks on the drag adjustment. Considering the availability and cost this is a good value as a functional low cost fishing rig.

Ā

Ok full disclosure, I really just wanted to try out this $10 rig just to see what it could do. I typically use ultra lite angling rigs. So this is a bit of a departure from my typical fishing gear. I did use it on some Phoenix canal fishing as an initial test of this rig. It worked well for me to catch several five and six pound tilapia along with some large mouth bass. The large tilapia put the drag to a good test with long protracted surging runs. The line peeled out in a consistent and predictable way. I do miss not having drag click adjustments. So no big deal, just different for me. Now that I have used it on some larger fish I can say it works as intended. I'm happy I bought it and I'll use it when I'm seeking larger fish. It ought to work well with crank baits too as the reel is fairly smooth. Yeah, not bad for $10.

Ā

Good luck in shopping. Looking forward to hear what you find. Be well, Cheers!

Totally agree. Itā€™s a sweet combo for the price. Itā€™s a beautiful combo if youā€™re into aesthetics as well.Ā

last year I compared the Daiwa revros/aird to the pflueger president xt/fenwick eagle.Ā  it was not even close how much better the pflueger/fenwick combo is in comfort, balance and sensitivity. the fenwick competes with my $200 st croix victory while the aird feels cheap

Not sure what your disposable income is like, but I'd try to avoid losing a couple $150 combos a year and stick with losing $10 walmart ozark combos like Fishing_rod mentioned.
