Super User DitchPanda Posted January 25, 2023 Super User Posted January 25, 2023 So when I started drinking back in my late teens all I drank was what's cheap...be it beer or boones farm. As I got older I switched to mixed drinks like whiskey coke and a little better grade of beers. Now I'm coming up on 40 and I find myself drinking what I once referred to as old man drinks. If I have booze in my hand these days there is a 95% chance its a gin and tonic or whiskey on the rocks. Its amazing how our tastes change as we age from sweet to stronger more challenging flavors. 5 Quote
Super User LrgmouthShad Posted January 25, 2023 Super User Posted January 25, 2023 The first time I tried whiskey I loved it. Same with bourbon. It was my Dad who had to switch from flavored whiskey to the real thing. Afterwards he admitted that I was right; unflavored is better. I have a tendency to like strong, bitter things though. Dark black coffee with nothing added, Guinness extra stout, etc. 6 Quote
Super User Bird Posted January 25, 2023 Super User Posted January 25, 2023 For me it was red wine. Detested any kind of wine growing up. As I've gotten older and seeing many studies showing the benefits of Red wine, the good stuff. I now drink a glass every single evening but much prefer a quality wine. Once you acquire a taste for wine, you can really taste the difference. I like a shot of 1800 Tequila from time to time as well. 1 Quote

Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted January 25, 2023 Global Moderator Posted January 25, 2023 I’ll be 40 in August and I’m the opposite of you. I started with Jack and Coke. Then Bush Lite, Jack and Coke, Bush Lite Jack and Coke, and so on. Then puke! ? I quickly got tired of hugging the porcelain throne and found my go to and have stuck with it ever since. 1 Quote
Woody B Posted January 25, 2023 Posted January 25, 2023 The only thing that's changed is I rarely drink anymore. When I was real young I'd drink whatever I could get. I've always been a cheapskate, so since I've been old enough to buy my own it's mostly been Natty Lights and Evan Williams. Quote

Don't worry I struggled with that plenty myself. Used to be drink to get drunk...now days its drink better stuff because I enjoy the taste. Can't remember the last time I puked from drinking. 1 Quote
Super User Deleted account Posted January 26, 2023 Super User Posted January 26, 2023 Rum and coke, Jack and coke, straight bourbon or Scotch, never ice on anything. We had 3 weeks of Army training at Ft Jackson before a deployment a while back, and 3 of us decided to treat ourselves to a nice steak before a year long stint in Africa and decided on Ruth Chris in Columbia SC (best RC I've been to by the way), and had a young waiter who asks for our drink order, so I say "dark rum and coke, 2 parts rum one part coke nothing else please", well he shows up with our drinks a few moments later, and he puts down a tumbler half filled with gold rum and one of those little old school glass bottles of coke, and timidly says "I brought it out like this so I'm sure it's right", and pours it at the table, The atmosphere was great, the steaks were on point, and this young man got the tip he deserved, memorable night. Oh, Africa was HOT! Quote

dave Posted January 26, 2023 Posted January 26, 2023 Go to Gin and Tonic every evening. Love bourbon too. I wouldn't have said that when I was first of drinking age. I am 57 and just love the distinct flavors of bourbon. Quote
volzfan59 Posted January 26, 2023 Posted January 26, 2023 Started with Chavis Regal scotch, processed to The McCallan scotch usually straight, sometimes on ice always with a good cigar. For beer, I'm not much of a craft beer type. Started with Bud, went to Bud Light, now it Ultra Quote
Super User casts_by_fly Posted January 26, 2023 Super User Posted January 26, 2023 When I was young and in college I drank a lot of cheap beer and whiskey/amaretto/midori sours. I started drinking wine after I met my wife because her parents like to go to local wineries (not good wine mind you). It wasn’t until after we moved to the uk that I started exploring more. The local wine shop did a semi annual tasting with all of their suppliers. £5 to enter and all you wanted to drink wine and spirits of whatever they brought. The rub was that the guide book around the event was also an order form, so you put your name on the front and checked them off as you went. Between that and the other local shop that had a hundred bottles of gin and that many more of scotch, we got to explore a lot. Then living in London during the cocktail explosion of the last 10 years meant ready access to modern cocktails. Now that we’ve moved back to the us, tequila and bourbon are more readily available (and better value than gin and scotch). There is also so much craft beer here that the selection is overwhelming. We’ve never stopped drinking wine. all of that is a long way of saying I agree, though not that everyone’s journey is the same order or even linear. On any given night (that’s not dry January) I might have a neat scotch or tequila, a mixed drink with tonic, a short cocktail, or a light beer. It’s just whatever mood I’m in at the time and how much effort I want to put into it. A 25 year old scotch is nice sometimes, but I’m also just as likely to pour crown apple over rocks. Quote

Super User BrianMDTX Posted January 26, 2023 Super User Posted January 26, 2023 I drink beer 90% of the time. Various IPA’s or Guinness. I do love a good Beefeater and tonic with a big wedge of lime though. Especially in summer. Quote

Little earlier than me. At 5 I was 'stealing' half bottles of Michelob during block parties - dad always monitored me though. At 11 I made a bet with dad on the golf course...I won and he actually got me a 6-pack of Mich. Rules were I could have one after doing yard-work or some other chore that was physically intensive. High-school it was rum and cokes, Kendall-Jackson wine and Mich. My roommate in the barrack in the Air Force introduced me to Guiness and I've been a stout fan ever since. Now-days - Murphy's is my brew, Tullamore Dew and Glenfiddich are my whiskeys and Croft Port is my wine. 1 Quote

BayouSlide Posted January 26, 2023 Posted January 26, 2023 Guinness, a quality red wine, a super-dry martini with Bombay Sapphire gin and any quality bourbon, neat or with ice, pretty well covers it for me. I guess now that I've reached 70 I qualify as old (enough). ?? Quote

Super User Darth-Baiter Posted January 26, 2023 Super User Posted January 26, 2023 I think drinks for the more mature folks are like Martinis, Manhattans, whisky sours, etc. Nothing with fruit. Quote
Super User TOXIC Posted January 26, 2023 Super User Posted January 26, 2023 My intense drinking days are long past. The fact that I had a security clearance for most of my working years meant that my embibing was limited to home and close friends. I could not afford a DUI even though at one point I was “politically” required to meet after hours with agency brass at a secure establishment and we all enjoyed what we called “Big Boys” which were grapefruit juice and top shelf vodka. Made for some interesting drives home from DC. Nowadays I like going to the brewery my brother in law is part owner of in St Augustine (Old Coast Ales) and learning the breweing process and trying the different brews. For 20 years we have been going to Lake St Clair and early on I was introduced to Jack and Coke and ever since then I have enjoyed it. I have sampled all of the iterations of Jack including Top Shelf, single Barrel, Sinatra and Sinatra Century. Of course we are on an island and the most we can do is fall in the lake. ?. I enjoy a good Manhattan or Old Fashioned with friends as well. Unless I’m in a rare mood, my drinking is probably 1 or 2 drinks a month. Of course I have an un named friend who makes moonshine so good Popcorn Sutton would be jealous. That is a real treat when I can get it. Quote
